University of Alaska Fairbanks Receives $5.3M Health Research Grant

FAIRBANKS, Alaska?

A health research center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks has been awarded a $5.3 million dollar grant from the National Institutues of Health.

The Center for Alaska Native Health Research will use the money to continue work over five years on obesity, genetics, nutrition, and cancer.

The money will pay for 12 pilot grants.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the center will use the money to expand earlier research.

The grant money is from the national institutes' development award program and is part of an effort to spread research money to states that do not have medical schools or established research scientists.
