Tips To Avoiding Many Email Marketing Scams | Debbie Clark ...

Email marketing is the perfect way of keeping in contact with your customers on a regular basis, and also increasing your customer base. Learning how to create a successful campaign can be daunting, though! The advice contained in this article will help you to move forward with your campaign and reach your goals!

Establish consistent branding for all outgoing email marketing transmissions. If you use a name, logo or design, try and continue using it on a regular basis, so it becomes recognizable to your customers. If each email you send is different than the last, your customers may not remember you.

Email Address

The first commandment of email marketing is to never send unsolicited messages. Your emails may be marked as spam by people who are not interested in receiving them. This will convey a bad image for your business and your IP address will be blocked if a lot of people complain about your emails, which means no one will receive your emails.

It is a great idea to require your customers to double-confirm when typing their email address into your newsletter. It?s common for people to type in their email address wrong when they first type it in. For example, they could flip-flop letters of the address. Having them put in their email address twice reduces the chances of these mistakes.

For the most effective email marketing campaigns, make sure that your mailing lists are built organically. That is to say that you should not buy just any old email list, since you have no way of knowing if the people on the list are interested in what you have to offer. Rather, collect information organically and grow your email recipients over time.

Your content should speak to the reader, not just jargon to bypass the junk mail box. You should limit the amount amount of sales jargon you write into your newsletters, this will help keep your messages out of your customer?s spam filters. Trying to avoid junk words, such as free or discount, by using other unnatural words will likely cause you to be blacklisted.

For better results, try sending your messages to only people whom you have received permission from. Sending emails to disinterested people can cause them to block you. It is even possible to lose your email address if several complaints are filed against you.

If your emails include images, make use of Alt tags. These are just in case an image is unable to load. The descriptions written in these tags need to be relevant to whatever the image is, so that the recipient can see the purpose of the image. Make sure you put these tags in your links, as well.

A good way to get your content out there is to provide a way for people to easily sign up for your email list. You could provide this option to people who visit your website by creating a place where they could sign up if they want to get updates, and everyone will be happy.

Celebrate your subscribers? birthdays with a congratulatory message. Add a field to your subscription form for customers to enter their birthday, and use this information to send an automated greeting when their special day rolls around. Just this simple step will go a long ways in making your customers feel like they are remembered and special. This can be especially true if you add a promotional code, discount or coupon for them.

Test your email marketing across multiple email platforms prior to sending your campaign. Once you create a template that looks perfect from where you are, try it on a variety of browsers, operating systems and email clients. A message?s appearance can vary widely depending on if you are using Hotmail, Gmail, or even the type of device being used.

Prior to contacting any of your customers through email, you should always get their permission to do so. Unwanted emails are usually viewed as spam, and are ignored or deleted without being read. Your ISP may take action against you as well because sending out lot of emails can be seen as spamming, which may be against their policies.

Email Marketing

As we had said before email marketing is one of the best ways you can reach out to your customers and get more customers in the process. By using the handy tips and information in this article, you will find that you are an email marketing master in no time!

Branding your business is essential, and should be incorporated in your marketing emails. Because of this, you should design a template which lets you incorporate the company colors, logo, and other special fonts that are on your site. This can help your readers instantly recognize you.

Google Is Testing Same-Day Delivery - Business Insider

We scoffed when we heard Google was thinking about getting into the same-day delivery business.

But now the New York Times reports that Google has launched a private test of a same-day delivery service in San Francisco, open only to Google employees and their friends.

The reasons why Google wants to get into same-day delivery are complex, but it comes down to this: Much of its advertising revenues comes from e-commerce ads.

The rise of mobile is erasing the distinction between online and offline commerce. And Google wants to get into retail payments, too, with its Google Wallet product.

By getting into delivery, Google knows nearly everything about a transaction, from the search terms that drove the consumer to a particular retailer to the way they paid for the deal to the location where they got the goods.?

The compact 49 square miles of San Francisco are now something of a hotbed for same-day delivery. eBay recently took its same-day delivery service, eBay Now, out of private beta, though it remains limited to San Francisco. TaskRabbit, Postmates, Exec, Instacart and other startups are competing to broker deliveries between retailers and consumers.

Amazon offers limited same-day deliveries in a patchwork of cities and regions across the country, though not in San Francisco. It's widely expected to start offering faster deliveries as it's forced to collect sales taxes on purchases; formerly, Amazon avoided setting up warehouses and other facilities in certain states to avoid being subject to sales-tax regulations.

Samsung Galaxy S III mini radios get probed by FCC

Galaxy S III mini has radios probed by FCC

The Samsung Galaxy S III mini (aka the GT-i8190) may have a Napolean complex, carrying as it does the name of its bigger sibling while endowed with a garden-variety 4-inch, 800 x 480 screen and other downmarket specs. But that didn't stop the inevitable FCC rendezvous, where its array of 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, GPS, GLONASS, FM, Bluetooth 4.0 (LE) and NFC radios were waved through (and lack of 4G confirmed). That means the new runt of the Galaxy litter should be free to travel to Europe soon for 439 retail -- but there's still no word on when smaller form-factor lovers stateside will be able to grab it.

Lawyers: DNA proves Gacy victim was misidentified

    By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

When Sherry Marino visited the grave marked with her son?s name, she would ask, ?Is this you, Michael??

Each time, she felt nothing, a feeling she brought to authorities, questioning whether the body in the grave belonged to her son, Michael Marino, a 14-year-old who went missing in 1976 who had long been labeled a victim of serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

On Wednesday, she was redeemed. She was on her way to the cemetery, marking the 36th year since the day her son disappeared, when her lawyers called her: The boy in the grave was not her son.

For years, Marino fought to have the grave exhumed. When she approached Steven Becker and Robert Stephenson of Becker Stephenson, they agreed to work on her behalf, pro bono.

After fighting bureaucracy, they said they succeeded in having the body unearthed.

?When we opened up the casket, we were immediately suspect, because there was neither a lower or an upper jaw bone connected to the skull and of course this was the major form of identification was through the dental records,? Becker said.

Added his partner, Stephenson: ?We did find a small piece of the jaw bone and another piece of the jaw connected to the upper part of the skull. One of those was tested, that?s where we got the DNA from.?

Previously, a forensic dentist said, based on dental records, that the body was Michael Marino?s.

But modern DNA, pulling from the same source, found Sherry Marino was not the parent of the exhumed body.

?She was relieved that now the rest of the world knew she was right,? Stephenson said.

Officials thought the body belonged to Michael Marino in part, Becker said, because the body was found in a grave site that included his friend, Kenny Parker, 16. Both boys hung out at an arcade in an area where Gacy prowled.

Officials ?have always asserted that Kenny Parker and Michael were in the same grave,? Becker said. ?Today we have proof that that was in fact not Michael. And if it was not Michael, was it Kenny Parker if he was identified in the same means??

Now the lawyers, who have argued that Gacy had accomplices, say the Gacy case must be reexamined.

Bill Dorsch, a former Chicago police officer, urges officials to look at a building at the corner of Miami and North avenues in Chicago where Gacy was a caretaker.

Dorsch knew Gacy and had even been in his home with his wife and son in 1974.

?One night coming home from my work as a police officer in Chicago, that?s when I encountered him walking from the building with a long-handled shovel in his hands,? Dorsch said.

Dorsch, who lived nearby, asked what Gacy was doing at that early hour. Dorsch said that Gacy replied, ?You know me, Bill, there?s not enough hours in the day.?

Seven years later, as Cook County law enforcement dug up bodies of boys and young men at Gacy?s home, Dorsch recalled their encounter. Since then, he?s been urging the Cook County Sheriff?s department to dig up the site near where they bumped into each other.

Witnesses also told Dorsch that Gacy dug trenches there at night.

Dorsch, Becker and Stephenson have also pursued the angle that Gacy had accomplices.

Related: Witnesses shed new light on John Wayne Gacy murder; suggest he had accomplice
Related: Serial killer John Wayne Gacy had accomplices, lawyers say

??The only way to bring closure to the victims? families is to investigate it,? Dorsch said. ?And every victim?s family that we talk to says the same thing: ?I just want to know.???

    What were they thinking?!?

Sometimes when visiting a home, I have that moment of surprise when damage is a direct result of how the home was built (and possibly designed).? This was such a home.

    Drywall ceiling water damage

    ?

These nice folks are getting ready to possibly list their home for sale.? And they have this mysterious staining and mildew/mold on the garage drywall ceiling.

    ?

Being in home repairs, I have received special traning that I can tell that this is not normal.? Don't try this at home.

    ?

Ok, so anyone would know this is not normal.? You got me.? Mold in the house, not normal, except on that sandwhich in the back of the fridge you forgot from last month.? You might want to get that out of there.

    ?

    But I digress...

    ?

So being the naturally curious guy I am, I wanted to find out WHY there is damage on a drywall ceiling that is under what looks to be a really nice roof.? My first thought was a nail pop or a window leak.?

So we went upstairs and looked out the window on the roof.? No window over the area.? Very strange.

It's a low slope roof, so I ventured out to see if there was a hole in the shingles.? No hole at all.? Hmmm...

A vent into a drywall ceiling?!? What were they thinking?

So then I go back down, and walk around to the left side of the house.? And that's where the surprise was waiting!

I was literally shocked that there would be a vent, directly onto a drywall ceiling.? And really, I was surprised there would be a vent here at all!

If there wasn't ceiling there, then the water would be coming directly into the garage.? Onto everything and anything the homeowner had stored there.? Really?? What were they thinking when they built this?

    ?

So my advise to this homeowner is that we delete this vent, cover the hole with sheathing, put in the vapor barrier, and install some vinyl siding over it.?

There will be no ventilation to this space over the garage, but at least there won't be any water damage from the ventilation either!

Hopefully that's the end of the surprises for this house.? But you just never know when you'll find yourself wondering, "What were they thinking?!"

CSN: Giants follow big win with small win

    October 25, 2012, 9:24 pm

SAN FRANCISCO -- Game One of the 2012 World Series was played big, almost comedically so. Three homers from Pablo Sandoval on pitches most players would disdain as being beneath their scientific approach screams bigger than bigger than life.

So of course Game Two was very very small, almost to the point of being subatomic. Yes, the result was the same ? Giants win, 2-0, this time to take a lead of two-games-to-just-watching for the Detroit Tigers ? but the details that separated victory from defeat were subtle to the point of undetectable.

[INSTANT REPLAY: Giants ride Bumgarner to 2-0 series lead]

Madison Bumgarner, the starting pitcher who gave Giant fans the yips, stifled the Tigers on two hits over seven innings. The only threat the Tigers did mount ended because the Tigers, already sensing that scoring would be difficult, tried to get Prince Fielder to score from first on Delmon Young?s second-inning double. He didn?t, because Gregor Blanco, Marco Scutaro and Buster Posey made two throws faster than Fielder could cover the last 90 feet.

But the Giants, who nearly formed a Baseball Bugs conga line Wednesday night, had to get their runs in the tiniest way possible -- with a single, walk, line-hugging bunt and a double play grounder in the seventh, and then three walks and a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

[RELATED: San Francisco Giants 2012 World Series page]

And both wins still look the same if you squint your eyes hard enough. At least that would be Brandon Crawford?s position.

The Giants shortstop handled more questions about his role in the Blanco/Scutaro/Posey relay (Blanco threw the ball over Crawford?s head to Scutaro, essentially) then about his double play grounder that scored Hunter Pence with the winning run. But since it was his best double play grounder ever, he talked happily about it, from the Blanco bunt that rolled just inside the third base line (?Oh, I thought it was a great bunt,? he laughed) to his own work.

?Frankly, I didn?t really know what to expect,? he said. ?I mean, I think I?d seen him (Tiger pitcher Doug Fister) a couple of times in Double-A, but that was it. I wasn?t trying to let a lot of things go through my head. I just tried to approach it as a two-strike at-bat.?

In other words, he walked to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out in the second game of the World Series with the score 0-0 and thought of . . . well, nothing.

    Okay, next to nothing.

?I sort of thought if I put the ball in play on the ground, they?d probably go for two rather than come home,? he said. ?I mean, I looked up, and they were playing back, so I sort of knew what they wanted to do.?

And to the Tigers? delight AND despair, he delivered that.

?We played double play depth because we felt that we couldn?t give them two runs,? Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. ?To be honest with you, we were absolutely thrilled to come out of that inning with just the one run, absolutely thrilled. I mean, we had to score anyway. You give them two, it makes it tougher, obviously, but we felt like we didn?t want them to open it up. We got the double play ball and we got out of it, and it actually worked really good for us.?

Well, except for the double play producing the only run the Giants would actually need. San Francisco scored again in the eighth, denying the locals the satisfaction of knowing that the last double play that produced the only run of a World Series Game was Game 7 in 1962.

Yes. The Bobby Richardson game. The one where the Yankees beat the Giants when Willie McCovey?s two-out line drive with Matty Alou at third and Willie Mays at second went right at Richardson, killing San Francisco?s chances of winning their first Series 48 years before they actually did.

So Brandon Crawford was denied a chance to bookend San Francisco baseball history because of Pence?s bases-loaded sacrifice fly off Phil Coke in the eighth. He was also denied a chance to be in on the relay that may have crushed Detroit?s spirits.

But he delivered the tiny little run that created the tiny little win that will disappear next to the comic-book win the night before. The win that counts just the same as the one before it. The one that sends the Giants to Detroit with a choke hold on a series that skewed heavily Tiger before it began.

And yes, in the World Series, wins come in one size. The one that fits all.

Car bomb in Damascus shatters feeble Syria cease-fire

A handout picture released by the Syrian Revolution General Commission shows Syrians inspecting the site of a car bomb attack in the Daf Shawk district of Damascus on Oct. 26. At least five people were killed and 32 wounded in a car bomb attack in southern Damascus, Syrian state television said, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said children were among the wounded.

    By Reuters

A powerful car bomb exploded in Damascus on Friday, inflicting many casualties and buffeting a shaky temporary truce in the Syrian conflict on the occasion of a Muslim religious holiday.

State television said the "terrorist car bomb" had killed five people and wounded 32, according to "preliminary figures."

Opposition activists said the bomb had gone off near a makeshift children's playground built for the Eid al-Adha holiday in the southern Daf al-Shok district of the capital.

Fighting erupted around Syria earlier as both sides violated the Eid al-Adha cease-fire arranged by international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, but violence was far less intense than usual.

The Syrian military said it had responded to attacks by insurgents on army positions, in line with its announcement ?Thursday that would cease military activity during the four-day holiday but would react to rebel actions.

Brahimi's cease-fire appeal had won widespread international support, including from Russia, China and Iran, President Bashar al-Assad's main foreign allies.

Syrian military agrees to Eid cease-fire; residents report shelling

The U.N.-Arab League envoy had hoped to build on the truce to calm a 19-month-old conflict that has killed an estimated 32,000 people and worsened instability in the Middle East.

Despite a Syrian truce that was due to begin on Friday morning to mark a Muslim holiday, activists claim that fighting has broken out across the country. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

Violence appeared to wane in some areas, but truce breaches by both sides swiftly marred Syrians' hopes for a peaceful celebration of Eid al-Adha, the climax of the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

"We are not celebrating Eid here," said a woman in a besieged Syrian town near the Turkish border, speaking above the noise of incessant gunfire and shelling. "No one is in the mood to celebrate. Everyone is just glad they are alive."

Her husband, a portly, bearded man in his 50s, said they and their five children had just returned to the town after nine days camped out on a farm with other families to escape clashes.

"We have no gifts for our children. We can't even make phone calls to our families," he said, a young daughter on his lap.

    'Painful disaster'
The Syrian conflict has aggravated divisions in the Islamic world, with Shiite Iran supporting Assad and U.S.-allied Sunni nations such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar backing his foes.

The imam of Mecca's Grand Mosque called on Arabs and Muslims to take "practical and urgent" steps to stop bloodshed in Syria.

Syrian opposition skeptical of 'feeble' ceasefire plan

"The world should bear responsibility for this prolonged and painful disaster (in Syria) and the responsibility is greater for the Arabs and Muslims who should call on each other to support the oppressed against the oppressor," Sheikh Saleh Mohammed al-Taleb told worshipers during Eid prayers.

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country

For some in Syria, there was no respite from war, but by dusk the death toll was still significantly lower than in recent days, when often between 150 to 200 people have been killed, according to reports that cannot be independently verified.

Assad himself, who has vowed to defeat what he says are Islamist fighters backed by Syria's enemies abroad, was shown on state television attending Eid prayers at a Damascus mosque.

The prime minister, information minister and foreign minister, as well as the mufti, Syria's top Muslim official, were filmed praying alongside the 47-year-old president.

Assad, smiling and apparently relaxed, shook hands and exchanged Eid greetings with other worshipers afterward.

    Military stalemate
Protests against Assad burst out in March last year, inspired by Arab uprisings elsewhere, but repression by security forces led to an armed insurgency, plunging Syria into a civil war that neither side has proved able to win or seems willing to end.

A commander from the rebel Free Syrian Army had said his fighters would honor the cease-fire but demanded Assad meet opposition demands for the release of thousands of detainees.

Some Islamist militants, including the Nusra Front, rejected the truce. Many groups were skeptical that it would hold.

"We do not care about this truce. We are cautious. If the tanks are still there and the checkpoints are still there then what is the truce?" asked Abu Moaz, spokesman for Ansar al-Islam, a group whose units fight in and around Damascus.

Surface interest, Win 8 caution on release day

    2 hrs.

U.S. shoppers woke up with mild Surface fever on Friday, lining up in moderate numbers to buy Microsoft's groundbreaking tablet computer designed to challenge Apple's iPad.

The global debut of the Windows 8 operating system was greeted with pockets of enthusiasm, but not the mania reserved for some previous Apple launches.

Microsoft is positioning the slick new computing device, which runs a limited version of Windows and Office with a thin, click-on keyboard cover, as a perfect combination of PC and tablet that is good for work as well as entertainment.

"I like the flexibility of having the keyboard and the touch capability," said Mike Gipe, 50, who works in sales for bank Barclays, and was planning to buy a Surface tablet at Microsoft's pop-up store in Times Square in New York.

"It's the combination of having the consumer stuff and the work stuff," he said, looking forward to using Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations on the new device.

The Times Square store was the first to sell the Surface???Microsoft's first ever own-brand computer???and other Windows 8 devices late on Thursday and will be open through the holiday shopping season. On Friday morning it was crowded with a mix of tourists and local office workers, but the cash tills were not jammed.

"With the other tablets you're a consumer. With this you can have input," said Peter Townsend, on vacation in New York from Australia with his wife, who bought a Surface tablet because he liked the keyboard.

Mark Pauluch, 28, who works for a New York private equity firm, said he would like a Surface because he does not want to take a laptop on a plane, but was disappointed when the sales representative told him the wifi-only Surface would not work with Cisco VPN networking.

"I can't use this to replace my work laptop unless it supports VPN," he said.

Elsewhere in the United States, there was solid but not overwhelming interest for the Surface.

"It's a good tablet. I am not a huge i-anything fan, I like Windows," said Matt Shanahan, a software developer who drove four hours to the tiny Michigan Avenue pop-up store in Chicago from Grand Rapids, Michigan to buy a Surface. "My friend and I are software developers and this gives us an opportunity to develop new apps," he said.

In a pop-up store at the San Francisco Centre mall about 50 people lined up to buy the new Surface.

"On an iPad you have to use half the screen for a keyboard, or buy an accessory. I love that the Surface is so integrated, that you can type and use Word and all my other programs," said Malte von Sehested, a textbook creator who bought a Surface.

"With the Surface you get a steeper learning curve???I had to get someone to show me how to side-swipe, swipe out to get the menus for instance," he said. "It may take a week, before it all becomes natural. That could be a problem for Microsoft. My old dad, he would get hit by that steeper learning curve."

Wall Street and tech industry experts failed to show great enthusiasm for Windows 8, but were prepared to give Microsoft time to succeed.

"Microsoft did not come out with Windows 8 thinking it will be an overnight success," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets. "But there's hope that this could be the silver bullet of growth (for Microsoft) as well as giving the PC industry some optimism that there's better days ahead."

The next six to 12 months is a "crucial period" for Microsoft to get traction with consumers, added Ives.

Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst at tech research firm Forrester, said consumers may be best served waiting for tablets running the full Windows 8 Pro and Intel chips, which are due out early next year.

"Windows 8 has a lot of great features, but RT has a long way to go," she said, citing a lack of apps and poor video performance on the Surface.

"It's not really a PC. RT is too restricted. Some people will be happier with the full Windows 8," she said.

(AP) ? David Stern spent nearly 30 years growing the NBA, turning a league that couldn't even get its championship series on live prime-time TV into a projected $5 billion a year industry.

Confident the NBA is in good shape and certain he has found someone who can make it even better, Stern is ready to end one of the most successful and impactful careers in sports history.

Stern will retire as commissioner Feb. 1, 2014, 30 years to the day after taking charge of the league, and be replaced by Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.

"I decided that things are in great shape and there's an organization in place that will ultimately be led by Adam that is totally prepared to take it to the next level," Stern said Thursday during a press conference following the league's board of governors meeting.

It's hard to be any better than Stern, perhaps the model sports commissioner.

Name an important policy in the NBA ? drug testing, salary cap, even a dress code ? and Stern had a hand in it. A lawyer by trade, he was a fearless negotiator against players and referees, but also their biggest defender any time he felt they were unfairly criticized.

"For all the things you've done for the NBA and for sports generally, I think there's no doubt that you'll be remembered as the best of all-time as commissioners go and you've set the standard, I think not even just for sports league commissioners, but for CEOs in any industry," Silver told Stern sitting to his left on a podium.

Stern told owners of his plans during their two days of meetings, and the board unanimously decided Silver would be his successor. Owners will begin negotiations with the 50-year-old Silver in hopes of having a contract completed by their next meeting in April.

Stern, who turned 70 last month, became commissioner on Feb. 1, 1984. He has been the NBA's longest-serving commissioner, establishing the league's brand around the world, presiding over team expansion and overseeing the establishment of the WNBA and the NBA Development League.

"There is no debate that David Stern has earned his spot in the pantheon of sports commissioners. Deservedly, his name and reputation will always be synonymous with the phenomenal growth and success of the NBA over the last three decades," union executive director Billy Hunter said in a statement. "His absence will surely be felt by anyone connected to the NBA and the sport of basketball, although clearly the league will be left in very capable hands with the appointment of Adam Silver as the next commissioner."

Seven franchises have been added under Stern and the league has seen a 30-fold increase in revenues. Stern insisted the NBA have a presence on social media, and the league and players have more than 270 million likes and followers on Facebook and Twitter.

"There are all kinds of other business metrics we could look at that would define David as one of the great business leaders of our time," Silver said.

Stern said he decided on his plans about six months ago, having guided the league through a lockout that ended nearly a year ago. He didn't want to leave until the labor deal was completed or until he was confident there was a successor in place, and both are done. Silver has been the league's No. 2 since 2006, and both Stern and league owners praise his abilities.

"I don't know what else to say other than to recite what I told the owners yesterday in executive session," Stern said. "I told them that it's been a great run, it will continue for another 15 months, that the league is in, I think, terrific condition."

Stern is the one who got it there, taking over what was a second-rate league with little-to-no TV presence ? the NBA Finals were on tape delay in the early 1980s ? and making basketball one of the world's most popular sports.

"A couple of things that stand out to me is that David has been, in my estimation, the type of commissioner that has set the standard not only for the NBA but for all of the sports," said Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, the outgoing chairman of the board of governors. "We have done so many wonderful things in the organization. The marketing, leadership, the brand recognition, going international way before our times, and David has led that."

Taylor said there's been a "40-fold" increase in revenues from the league's national TV contract, and that the average player salary will have had grown from $250,000 when Stern took over to $5 million by the end of the current collective bargaining agreement.

Stern was the league's outside counsel from 1966-78, then its general counsel before becoming executive vice president of business and legal affairs from 1980-84. He replaced Larry O'Brien to become the league's fourth commissioner, getting a boost in taking the game mainstream with the popularity of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, and soon Michael Jordan. The league began marketing its stars, and Stern found the desire for them was greatest in some far-away lands.

The real explosion came in 1992, when those three headed the Dream Team that led the U.S. to the Olympic basketball gold medal while winning fans around the world. The NBA has gone on to play games in 17 countries, staging 114 international games.

"He's done a remarkable job," Major League Baseball Commission Bud Selig said at the World Series. "To think of what the NBA was when he came in and what it is today, most people judge him very very highly."

There were rough patches, particularly the brawl between Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans in 2004, and the betting scandal involving former referee Tim Donaghy. Stern had already passed off most of the heavy lifting to Silver by last year, but he was the one absorbing the criticism during the lockout for the second shortened season in his tenure.

He sometimes appeared worn down during the negotiations, even missing one critical bargaining session while sick, but insists he's got plenty of energy to keep working now.

"I feel great," Stern said. "I'm enjoying my job, but I'm looking forward to doing some other things. I'm stepping down, I'm not retiring."

Stern just recently returned from China, Germany and Italy, and plans another overseas trip next season, and will remain an adviser to the league in retirement on international matters.

"We just think that his leadership will be important to our future," Taylor said.

It's meant everything to the league's past.

The league has reported huge increases in ticket and merchandise sales, and TV ratings are at an all-time high. Last season's lockout, the second time the league lost games to a work stoppage, hardly made a dent in the league's business or in fans' interest.

But even for Stern, business has always taken a back seat to basketball. He's sought changes to improve play, such as the elimination of isolation play that bored him, to implementing penalties that go into effect this season for flopping.

"For the most part it's been a series of extraordinary experiences and enormous putting together of pieces of a puzzle and it goes on forever," Stern said. "And there will always be another piece of the puzzle and so the question is at what point do you decide that, let someone else do it? That's the point that I'm at now."

Taylor and Spurs owner Peter Holt, who is replacing him as board chairman, said the owners will work to have a contract with Silver by April. Silver came to the NBA 20 years ago and served a variety of positions before becoming the deputy commissioner in 2006. He was the lead negotiator during the lockout and Stern has relied more heavily on him in recent years, even turning to Silver to answer questions on tougher topics.

Stern said he wouldn't leave until he knew there was a successor ready, and he has repeatedly said Silver is ready for that role. Stern said he would always remain available to take a call and help the league.

"Life is a journey and it's been a spectacular journey," Stern said. "Each step along the way there are things that you have to do, things that you maybe wish you hadn't done. But I don't keep that list, and so I'm totally pleased and I'm particularly pleased with the transition of which we're now embarking."

What options are available to borrowers looking for finance? | Loans

In today?s world there are a number of credit options available to borrowers, and this can be looked at in a couple of ways:

The positive spin is that loans can be essential for people wanting to make a large purchase such as a home, or wanting to renovate their property. If someone does not have enough cash to do this ? and most often people do not ? a loan could be the only option available. Without mortgages, for example, it would be impossible for the average person to buy a house and to get on the property ladder.

A negative view of getting credit is that this can be a route to debt and of course debt can often grow worse, leading to other financial and personal problems for debtors. There are also lenders that charge high interest rates.

You can apply for an online secured loan here http://www.nemo-loans.co.uk/apply.aspx

The right loan really can be beneficial, and most people will take out one or several loans during their life, to pay for vehicles, homes, improvements and much more. However, the wrong loan could lead to more debt. If you require a loan to make an important purchase and you are determined not to go beyond your means, consider the following tips:

Consider the size of loan you need

When money is available through loans it can be tempting to borrow more than you actually need, or can realistically afford, to borrow. Remember that this money must be paid back at some point, with interest on top, and consider how much you actually need before you fall to the temptation of greed.

    Money shops

They are springing up all over the place at the moment but some money shops that offer instant loans can charge very high interest rates.

    Established, respected companies

When searching for a loan, a good way to cut through the chaff of lenders is to use a company that is widely used and respected. The internet is a great way to research different lenders and to read up on a lender?s history, to make sure that they are a reputable firm.

So whether you are searching for the best secured homeowner loans to buy a new car, or some cash to invest in a new business, do your research and you shouldn?t get ripped off.

Screening method aids RNA drug development research

ScienceDaily (Oct. 9, 2012) ? Scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have developed a new method of screening more than three million combinations of interactions between RNA and small molecules to identify the best targets on RNA as well as the most promising potential drug compounds. This novel technology may lead to more efficient drug development.

The study was published in the October 9, 2012 issue of the journal Nature Communications.

RNA has multiple biological functions, including encoding and translating proteins from genes and regulating the amount of protein expressed under various cellular conditions. Recent studies have identified RNA as a "molecular switch" that controls cellular events such as gene expression, making RNA an attractive target for small molecules that serve as chemical genetics probes, analytical tools or potential drugs.

However, to date information on which small molecules bind to which parts (structural motifs) of RNA has been sparse, hampering this promising area of research and development. That's where the new study comes in.

"For the first time we have been able to probe what types of small molecules would be good lead drugs to target RNA by probing millions of RNA-ligand combinations," said Matthew Disney, an associate professor at TSRI who authored the study with graduate student Tuan Tran. "In a viral genome, for example, RNA folds such as hairpin loops contribute to disease, but we don't know which hairpin loops should we focus on. In the study, we were able to define those RNA motifs, including hairpin loops, that bind to small molecules and the types of small molecules that bind to RNA."

Disney notes that larger, more chemically diverse small molecule libraries could be screened to provide additional ligands with an affinity for RNA recognition, plus additional RNA motifs preferred by small molecules. The new method could be used to create easily accessible small molecule libraries biased towards binding to RNA.

The new technology will also be used in a computer program designed by Disney that brings together information on the interaction between small molecules and RNA with data on the RNA folds present in segments of the human genome that contribute to specific human diseases.

The study, "Identifying the Preferred RNA Motifs and Chemotypes that Interact by Probing Millions of Combinations," was supported by National Institutes of Health (grant R01 GM079235), the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation and the Research Corporation for Science Advancement.

Netflix CEO To Step Down From Microsoft's Board ? CBS Seattle

File photo of Reed Hastings CEO of Netflix (Photo Credit: Hector Vivas/Latin Content/Getty Images)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is leaving Microsoft?s board of directors next month, giving him more time to focus on the myriad of challenges facing Netflix?s video subscription service.

The departure announced Tuesday comes 5 1/2 years after Hastings joined Microsoft?s board.

Hastings? connection with the world?s largest software maker proved fruitful for Netflix Inc.

Microsoft?s Xbox 360 video game console became one of the first Internet-connected devices that could be plugged into a television set so selections from Netflix?s library of movies and old TV series could be streamed into subscribers? households. Analysts credit the Xbox and other video game consoles for helping Netflix attract millions more subscribers during the past four years.

?Reed has been a terrific board member, and his insights and experience have really helped guide us through a critical period of transformation for both Microsoft and the industry,? Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement.

When Hastings steps down from the board at Microsoft?s annual meeting on Nov. 28, the company will appoint a new lead independent director. Hastings has filled that role since December 2010. The position requires coordinating meetings with other board members with no direct ties to Microsoft and steering communications with major shareholders.

Microsoft Corp. paid Hastings $265,000 in cash and stock during the company?s past fiscal year, which ended in June, according to documents filed Tuesday.

Hastings, 51, also owns about 226,000 shares of Microsoft stock currently worth $6.6 million.

The decision to quit Microsoft?s board appears to be driven by Hastings? desire to restore Netflix?s luster on Wall Street. The Los Gatos, Calif., video company?s stock closed Tuesday at $65.53, more than 75 percent below its peak of nearly $305 more than a year ago.

In a statement, Hastings said he wants to devote time to Netflix and his long-running efforts to create better schools in California. He remains on the boards of Netflix and online social networking leader Facebook Inc., which he joined last year.

A backlash followed Hastings? abrupt decision last summer to start charging separately for the company?s DVD-by-mail plan and the service that streams video through the Xbox and a variety of other Internet-connected devices. The change resulted in a price increase of as much as 60 percent for Netflix subscribers who wanted to keep getting both DVDs and Internet video from the company.

Hordes of subscribers lambasted Hastings and Netflix, resulting in mass cancellations that alarmed investors. Although the furor over the price increase has diminished, investors remain worried about Netflix?s dwindling profits as it shoulders rising costs for online video licensing fees and an international expansion. Intensifying competition from Amazon.com Inc. and other companies offering various ways to stream Internet video also are dragging down Netflix?s stock.

Analysts have periodically wondered whether Microsoft might be interested in launching its own video service on the Xbox in an attempt to become a more influential force in living rooms. Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Wash., also could tie a video service to smartphones and tablets running on its Windows operating system.
