Tunisia Islamist party chooses new prime minister

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? Tunisia's ruling Islamist party named an interior minister seen as a conservative loyalist to form a new government Friday, in a signal the party is unlikely to back down to opposition demands to try to smooth over the country's political crisis.

Ali Larayedh, accused of failing to stem violence by ultraconservative Muslims when he was in charge of Tunisia's security as interior minister, said he would start immediate consultations on forming a new government, according to the state news agency TAP.

He said after his first Cabinet meeting that the new government should represent different layers of society, including the secular media and arts worlds and preachers, TAP reported. He has 15 days to present a new government.

The killing of an opposition leader last month plunged Tunisia into its deepest political crisis since it started the Arab Spring uprisings two years ago. It led to violent protests against the Islamist-led government and demands for a crackdown on extremist violence.

The governing Ennahda party appointed Larayedh to take over after former Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali who resigned because the party rejected his proposal to form an apolitical government of technocrats in response to the protests.

The split between the party and Jebali was seen as a deep disagreement between the party's hardline and moderate wings.

Larayedh, who has been widely criticized by the opposition for failing to ensure stability, is believed to come from the wing of the party that has been less willing to compromise with secular parties. His nomination could make the task of finding consensus and building a coalition with Tunisia's other political parties more difficult.

The party chose Larayedh, 57, in an overnight meeting, Moadh Ghannouchi, the son of Ennahda's leader, told the Associated Press.

Larayedh spent 15 years in prison under the previous regime and has attempted to reform the police force which was widely hated as the enforcer for dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Security, however, has been a problem under his watch, especially with regular attacks by extremist Islamists over the past year against targets they deem impious, culminating in the Sept. 14 assault on the U.S. embassy over an amateur film made in the United States attacking the Prophet Muhammad.

Larayedh also announced late Thursday the arrest of several suspects in the assassination of opposition lawyer Chokri Belaid, saying "rapid progress" had been made in the investigation.

He gave few details, however, and could not confirm whether those arrested were the suspected killers or say who was behind the assassination.

Belaid was shot four times outside his home on Feb. 6, provoking days of unrest as many Tunisians held the government responsible for his death.

Super Space Germs Could Threaten Astronauts

The weightlessness of outer space can make germs even nastier, increasing the dangers astronauts face, researchers say.

These findings, as well as research to help reduce these risks, are part of the ongoing projects at the International Space Station?that use microgravity to reveal secrets about microbes.

"We seek to unveil novel cellular and molecular mechanisms related to infectious disease progression that cannot be observed here on Earth, and to translate our findings to novel strategies for treatment and prevention," said microbiologist Cheryl Nickerson at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute. Nickerson detailed these findings on Monday (Feb. 18) at the annual meeting of the American Association for Advancement of Science in Boston.

In space, researchers encounter greatly reduced levels of gravity, often erroneously referred to as zero gravity. This near-weightlessness can have a number of abnormal effects on astronauts, such as causing muscle and bone loss.

Although microgravity can distort normal biology, conventional procedures for studying microbes on Earth can cause their own distortions.

Experiments on Earth often involve whirling cells around to keep them from settling downward in a clump due to gravity. However, the physical force generated by the movement of fluid over cell surfaces causes great changes to the way cells act. This property, known as fluid shear, influences a broad range of cell behaviors, and the shear that experiments on Earth introduce could twist results. [6 Coolest Space Shuttle Experiments]

In microgravity, researchers do not need to constantly disturb cells to keep them from clumping, as gravity is not pulling down on the cells to any significant degree. As such, experiments in microgravity can attain low fluid shear, and thus better reflect what normally happens with germs and cells inside bodies, Nickerson explained.

For example, the most common sites of human infection are the mucosal, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts, where fluid shear is typically low.

Salmonella in space

In an earlier series of NASA space shuttle and ground-based experiments, Nickerson and her colleagues discovered that spaceflight actually boosted the virulence,?or disease-causing potential, of the food-borne germ Salmonella.

"Does microgravity alter how Salmonella behaves? You bet it does, in a profound and novel way," Nickerson said.

This aggressive bacterium infects an estimated 94 million people globally and causes 155,000 deaths each year. In the United States alone, more than 40,000 cases of salmonellosis are reported annually, resulting in at least 500 deaths and health care costs in excess of $50 million, scientists said.

"By studying the effect of spaceflight on the disease-causing potential of major pathogens like Salmonella, we may be able to provide insight into infectious disease mechanisms that cannot be attained using traditional experimental approaches on Earth, where gravity can mask key cellular responses," Nickerson said.

These findings are of special concern for astronaut health?during extended spaceflight missions. Space travel already weakens astronaut immunity, and these findings reveal that astronauts may have to further deal with the threat of disease-causing microbes that have boosted infectious abilities.

Microgravity apparently causes many genes linked with Salmonella's virulence to switch on and off in ways not seen in Earth-based labs. The same appears to happen with bacterialgenes linked to resistance against stress and to the formation of fortress-like structures known as biofilms. A better understanding of which genes spaceflight alters could help design therapies to fight or prevent infection, helping protect people both in space and on Earth.

"We need to outpace infectious disease because we're losing the fight to the pathogens," Nickerson told SPACE.com.

Better vaccines

Microgravity research could also help lead to novel vaccines. In a recent spaceflight experiment aboard space shuttle mission STS-135 (the last-ever shuttle flight), researchers brought along a genetically modified Salmonella-based vaccine designed to protect against pneumococcal pneumonia. Analysis of the effects of microgravity on the behavior of the vaccine could help reveal how to genetically modify it to improve it.

"Recognizing that the spaceflight environment imparts a unique signal capable of modifying Salmonella virulence, we will use this same principle in an effort to enhance the protective immune response of the recombinant, attenuated Salmonella vaccine strain," Nickerson said.

Experiments aboard the space station are now permitting microbial studies over prolonged time frames, ones not available during shuttle-based experiments. These studies in space are carried out in conjunction with simultaneous analyses on Earth using the same hardware as those in orbit, so researchers can compare the behavior of bacterial cells under normal Earth gravity. [Top 10 Mysterious Diseases]

In addition, researchers hope to simulate microgravity using machines such as rotating wall vessel bioreactors, which grow cells in ways that mimic how cells float in outer space. Such research helped confirm that a protein called Hfq plays a key role in the Salmonella response to spaceflight conditions. Still, these bioreactors can only replicate about 70 percent of the effects seen in spaceflight.

"Seventy percent is good, but we've missed 30 percent," Nickerson said.

Weightless nematodes

Nickerson was first to study the effects of spaceflight on pathogen virulence and the first to profile the infection process in human cells in spaceflight. Her PHOENIX experiment, the capsule will mark the first time a whole, living organism will be infected with a germ, and simultaneously monitored in real time during the infection process under microgravity conditions. PHOENIX will fly on the SpaceX Dragon capsule travelling to the space station later this year, and will infect a nematode worm with Salmonella.

"Nematodes are wonderful for studying Salmonella. Tthey're basically one, long gastrointestinal tract from one end to the other," Nickerson said.

The significance of the results Nickerson and her colleagues have uncovered extends to more than just Salmonella. The researchers' experiments on the protein Hfq show that it apparently serves as a key regulator of gene responses to spaceflight conditions across a number of other bacterial species, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common hospital-acquired infection.

"It is exciting to me that our work to discover how to keep astronauts healthy during spaceflight may translate into novel ways to prevent infectious diseases here on Earth," Nickerson said.

French hostages probably separated, Hollande says

PARIS/MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Seven French hostages abducted by suspected Nigerian Islamist militants have probably been separated into two groups and efforts are continuing to locate them, French President Francois Hollande said on Thursday.

French, Nigerian and Cameroonian officials earlier denied French media reports that the seven family members, who were seized in Cameroon on Tuesday and taken over the border, had been freed.

"It's best to work discreetly for now to identify the exact place where our citizens are being held - most likely in two groups - and work out how we can free them under the best conditions," Hollande told reporters.

Paris was "fully cooperating" with Nigeria and Cameroon, he added, noting that French troops were nearby as their base was in the Chadian capital N'Djamena, 150 km (93 miles) away.

The Nigerian military located the hostages and kidnappers between Dikwa and Ngala in the far northeast, a Nigerian military source in Borno said earlier on Thursday, asking not to be identified.

Dikwa is less than 80 km (50 miles) from the border with Cameroon where the three adults and four children were taken hostage on Tuesday.

A senior Cameroonian military official declined to comment, saying the matter was too sensitive.

French gendarmes backed by special forces arrived in northern Cameroon on Wednesday to help locate the family, a local governor and French defense ministry official said.

Citing a Cameroon army officer, French media reported earlier on Thursday that the hostages had been found alive in a house in northern Nigeria. That was denied by the France, Nigeria and Cameroon.

DIFFICULT SITUATION

The abduction was the first case of foreigners being seized in the mostly Muslim north of Cameroon, a former French colony, and highlighted the threat to French interests in West Africa since Paris deployed thousands of troops to Mali to oust al Qaeda-linked Islamists who controlled the country's north.

But the region - like others in West and North Africa with porous borders - is considered within the operational sphere of Boko Haram and fellow Nigerian Islamist militants Ansaru.

On Sunday, seven foreigners were snatched from the compound of Lebanese construction company Setraco in northern Nigeria's Bauchi state, and Ansaru took responsibility.

Northern Nigeria increasingly is afflicted by attacks and kidnappings by Islamist militants. Ansaru, which rose to prominence only in recent months, has claimed the abduction in December of a French national who is still missing.

Three foreigners were killed in two failed rescue attempts last year after being kidnapped in northern Nigeria and Ansaru, blamed for those kidnaps, warned this could happen again.

"Staging a successful rescue is always difficult, but even more so if the kidnappers are waiting for it," said Peter Sharwood-Smith, Nigeria country manager of security firm Drum Cussac.

"After the death of three European hostages in rescue-intervention attempts last year, Nigeria and France will be hoping for a peaceful resolution. The problem could be the kidnappers lack of enthusiasm for negotiation or deals. The fact that four of the hostages are children adds further difficulty to the decision for France and Nigeria."

The kidnapping in Cameroon brought to 15 the number of French citizens being held in West Africa.

PS4's final look is unknown even to a Sony exec, but it won't support the DualShock 3

PS4 Holiday 2013

There's been some debate over the state of the PlayStation 4's hardware when Sony declined to display the console itself at its PlayStation Meeting. As we're quickly learning, the company had good reason to keep the box under wraps: it's not quite done yet. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Hiroshi Kawano has revealed to 4Gamer that even he hasn't seen the finished system, and he only saw the DualShock 4 the day before it went on stage. We wouldn't worry about the design's progress just yet, but the news hints that Sony's timing on pulling it all together is much tighter than it was for the PS3 -- although that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Whatever the PS4 looks like in the end, we know it won't support the DualShock 3. Perpetual font of wisdom (and Worldwide Studios President) Shuhei Yoshida has warned that the PlayStation Move is the only controller making the leap to the next generation. That's not entirely surprising given the changes in button layout and the addition of some Move technology -- Sony likely wants to set some expectations, and our existing game library won't play on the PS4 as-is. The cutoff may still be disappointing for anyone who invested in a full set of gamepads for LittleBigPlanet sessions and has to once more start from scratch.

If a Sick Day Is the First Break You've Had in Months, You Need to Slow Down

If a Sick Day Is the First Break You've Had in Months, You Need to Slow DownWhen you're a hard worker and care about your job, it's easy to get a little out of control. Then, suddenly, you're sick and you feel like that world's going to end without you. It won't, and your illness is a signal from your body that you need to slow down. Paula Davis-Laack, writing for Psychology Today, explains:

Our bodies and our brains aren't designed to work without breaks. Performance psychologist Jim Loehr explains that sustained high performance requires short breaks every 90-120 minutes. Many busy professionals feel out of control when it comes to their schedules, and businesses would be well served to make wellness a priority and give their employees opportunities for more control over their work. You might not have much control over how your boss manages or the policies that are in place at work, but you can focus on your response to the situation. Don't be afraid to have the difficult conversations, be they with yourself, your boss, or your health care provider.

If you're not taking these breaks, you're overworking yourself and ought to follow Paula's advice. Implementing change can seem like a tough task, but you'll have an easier time by start by using reasonable break times instead of pushing them aside. Take the lunch break you're entitled to. After 90-120 minutes, go get a glass of water and don't do anything while you drink it. Relax, and avoid thinking too much for a little while. After all, avoiding breaks hurts your productivity.

Inmate wanted Bieber castrated, suffocated

Mike Coppola / Getty Images

By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

Things just got a little scarier. News of a possible murder plot formulated by an inmate and two fugitives against pop star Justin Bieber made headlines in December, and now the details behind that conspiracy have unraveled after the audio of phone calls made last November from a prison near Las Cruces, N.M., were released.

Police told ABC News ' Albuquerque affiliate KOAT that inmate Dana Martin, who is doing time at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility for the murder and rape of a 15-year-old girl, was the mastermind behind the plot.

A Justin Bieber murder plot?

According to police, Martin directed a former jailhouse friend in Vermont, Mark Staake, and Staake's nephew, Tanner Ruane, to carry out the kidnapping and murder, and asked Ruane in a taped conversation, "Did he go over the Bieber thing with you?"

"Nah. The way I like to work dude, I like to know as little as possible," Ruane replied. "He's gonna use one of the things you gave him, and then he's gonna take care of it." Oh, and it gets worse.

"We went and bought the hedge clippers," Ruane said. "You're gonna give me 5 large ($5,000) for each one I get." Police said that Ruane was instructed to castrate Bieber and his bodyguard with the clippers, and then suffocate them with a scarf.

"Tie it really tight, and that cuts off all the oxygen, and then tie it in the back again, really tight. That seals the deal," Martin was heard saying.

Justin Bieber posts family photos

Luckily, before any of this could take place, Staake and Ruane were arrested by border patrol agents after making a wrong turn in to Canada. They, along with Martin, now face two counts each of conspiracy to commit murder and two counts each of conspiracy to commit aggravated battery.

Bieber's camp were not immediately available for comment, but told E! News when the plot first came about in December, "We take every precaution to protect and insure the safety of Justin and his fans."

Nokia Lumia 920 takes the cake in camera comparison vs BlackBerry Z10 vs Galaxy S III vs iPhone 5 vs Nexus 4

1. emadshiny posted on 2 hours ago 3 13

where is Xperia Z??
it must be included as well

8. drpain posted on 2 hours ago 7 4

It's about on par with the GSIII, which is disappointing considering the GSIII came out about 8 months ago.

9. emadshiny posted on 2 hours ago 1 1

maybe, but the way pictures are put beside each other in this comparison will show the differences better.

33. Nathan_ingx posted on 1 hour ago 6 2

Sorry sir, but by your comment i can tell you that you don't know much about photography. I take it that you comment just because you're a fan of Samsung.
Coming to the point, the level of contrast on the photo taken by the 920 is the most distinct...and Z10's was the worst.
920 triumphs on all the 4 comparisons.

the video was fake, but the actual results from 920 are pretty close to that. if it wasnt for that reflection in van, everyone wouldhv thought that it was from 920. have you seen that toy car video?

23. MrJerry posted on 1 hour ago 1 1

I belive this
Even though I don't like Nokia but L920 camera is one of the best
I can tell because I am selling this device

But as we all know...the other parts are not as good as its camera

37. MrJerry posted on 56 min ago 2 4

I meant the other parts are not good enough..dosen't mean they are bad

First, its design is not user friendly and it is even heavy!
Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely OK with that but those are not favorite factors to Girls and Women and Boys..You may not disagree if I say GS3(Slim, Light) has much better design for Normal people who actually all the companies are targeting for
I just take GS3 as an example because many people here think GS3 is ugly...

Second, it dosen't have "featuers"
Many people here think those are just gimmicks and useless. Please "OPEN YOUR EYES". Even if you use it once a month or a year, it's still better than nothing and many people think so too as well as it is much easier to sell

Lastly, MS OS is yet far behind than iOS and Android.
I am positive that since many people like MS OS for their Laptops and Desktops(Including me), it's matter of time for MS OS to catch up the others..but at the moment it is bad.
The bad news for Nokia is that MS will want Sammy and the others to be their main manufacturer for their sake in the future(You don't actually think Nokia should be the main company for WP forever, do you?)
Then I don't really see Nokia will hold its top position in WP

41. DFranch posted on 32 min ago 3 2

First, you say heavy, I say it diesn't need a case. My brothers iPhone 4s with a case os as big and heavy as my 920, except he has a 3.5 inch screen and I have a 4.5 inch screen.

Second, you say it has no features, care to elaborate? What features is it missing?

Lastly, I'll admit Android is probably ahead of WP8 in several ways, but to say iOS is ahead of WP8 is just ignorant. iOS is nothing but an app launcher. They started the revolution, but since then really havent evolved much at all.

Any while I'd love to see Samsung step up to the plate with a good WP8 phone (I used to own a Focus S), All they seem interested in doing is recycling android phones into WP8 phones and taking forever to make it to market.

44. jlp34876 posted on 23 min ago 0 0

If samsung will release a good wp8 device it will compete with their flagship android device, I think samsung should focus on android.

45. Emily1985 posted on 17 min ago 0 3

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but I'm pretty sure most people would agree with me that Lumia 920 looks better then s3.

Nokia weighs more, it is a disadvantage but he also built much better than the s3 which is a great advantage (you do not need to put a protective cover)

The OS is fast and beautiful but lacks a few improvements(Center notifications and the ability to close applications more easily), but the OS is far from "bad".

25. Emily1985 posted on 1 hour ago 1 1

Maybe the universe we live in is fake.

So to make Nokia look bad or pureview look bad? And here we have the Lumia 920 in first place according to Gizmodo. I respect phonearena, but they hire cronies for staff.

It's nice having a good phone camera, and it's a consideration. It not the prime consideration, however. All things being relatively equal, (as far as getting contract vendors to cough up physical components) Better software improvements would help out all of the contenders? Right, maybe?

The Nokia Lumia 920 is definitely the stand out here. Even if it was arguably on par with the other flagships in other categories, its low light performance is unbeatable with any smartphone at the moment.
The real surprise here is the Z10. It took some pretty decent pictures!

Obama to press GOP on averting sequester

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Facing yet another fiscal deadline, President Barack Obama is urging congressional Republicans to accept more tax revenue in order to avert looming, across-the-board budget cuts due to take effect in less than two weeks.

Obama, fresh off a three-day Florida golfing trip, was to press his case during an event at the White House on Tuesday morning. Emergency responders, a group of workers the White House says could be affected if state and local governments lose federal money as a result of the cuts, were joining him.

The $85 billion in cuts, known as the sequester, will start taking effect on March 1 unless Congress acts. The White House says the sequester could derail an economy still suffering from high unemployment and sluggish growth.

Obama wants to offset the sequester through a combination of targeted spending cuts and increased tax revenue. The White House is backing a proposal unveiled last week by Senate Democrats that is in line with the president's principles.

But that plan was met with an icy reception by Republicans, who oppose raising more tax revenue in order to offset the cuts. GOP leaders say the president got the tax increases he wanted at the beginning of the year when Congress agreed to raise taxes on family income above $450,000 a year.

The White House said Obama on Tuesday would call on congressional Republicans to compromise and accept the Senate Democrats' proposal.

The Democrats propose to generate revenue by plugging some tax loopholes. Those include tax breaks for the oil and natural gas industry and businesses that have sent jobs overseas, and by taxing millionaires at a rate of at least 30 percent.

Some Republicans, including House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., have advocated plugging loopholes, but as part of a discussion on a tax overhaul, not sequestration.

"Loopholes are necessary for tax reform," Ryan said Sunday on ABC's "This Week." `'If you take them for spending, you're blocking tax reform and you're really not getting the deficit under control."

The sequester was first set to begin taking effect on Jan. 1. But as part of the "fiscal cliff" negotiations, the White House and lawmakers agreed to push it off for two months in order to create space to work on a larger budget deal.

With little progress on that front in recent weeks, Obama is calling for the sequester to be put off again, though it's unclear whether another delay would have any impact on the prospects for a broader budget agreement.

CDC app lets you solve disease outbreaks at home

ATLANTA (AP) ? You may not be a disease detective, but now you can play one at home.

The nation's public health agency has released a free app for the iPad called "Solve the Outbreak." It allows users to run through fictional outbreaks and make decisions: Do you quarantine the village? Talk to people who are sick?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the app was designed in-house and wouldn't give an estimate for development costs.

The agency says it is using social media to educate the public about diseases and to promote an appreciation for public health work. The app went live this week.

Wall Street in low gear with consumers in focus

Stocks could stay in low gear in the week ahead, as traders look for clarity on the Federal Reserve's policy, the housing recovery and most especially ? the consumer.

Home builder sentiment Tuesday, housing starts Wednesday, and existing-home sales Thursday could provide a good look at how the housing market is faring. The Fed also releases minutes of its last meeting on Wednesday and there is much interest in what officials might say about ending extraordinary easing policies earlier than expected.

At the December meeting, several Fed members said they wanted to stop quantitative easing by the end of this year. The Fed is currently buying $85 billion in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities monthly, under the program. But since the December meeting minutes were released in January, Treasury rates have risen and the 10-year note yield has moved to a higher range around 2 percent.

"I can't imagine that conversation got any less pertinent since December, given the fact we avoided the 'fiscal cliff' and the economic numbers got better," said Deutsche Bank chief U.S. economist Joseph LaVorgna. The makeup of the Fed changed in January, with new voting members, but it is still not expected to take on a more hawkish tone.

Of big interest will be Wal-Mart's earnings Thursday, after Bloomberg news service Friday quoted an email from a mid-level executive saying Wal-Mart's February sales were a "total disaster," the weakest start to a month he'd seen in his seven years with the company. Wal-Mart, in response, said like any organization, it sees internal communications that are not entirely accurate or in context. The report drove Wal-Mart and other retail stocks lower Friday.

"You're looking at a very important company in a very important space, but it doesn't always meant that as one company goes so goes everyone else and so goes retail sales," said LaVorgna.

Economists have been concerned that the 2-percent increase in payroll taxes would hold back consumers, as gasoline prices are also rising. There is also worry that the delay in tax refunds this year could also dampen consumer spending.

"Wal-Mart bears watching for hints that there was a slowdown. I would be hesitant to say the consumer is done. The consumer is very resilient. Vehicle sales have been good ... it looks anecdotally that vehicle sales numbers look to be okay through February," LaVorgna said, adding that data show consumer sentiment is recovering.

"I certainly think we have to wait until Wal-Mart actually lets us know what the numbers look like," said Art Hogan of Lazard Capital Markets. "I don't think it takes very many bricks to build a bridge to lower consumer sales on the low end and lower consumer sales in general." He said the snowstorm which slammed New England earlier during the month could also have impacted sales since it paralyzed travel for several days.

"Next week, we get a lot of housing data, so the economic-data calendar is richer. We probably start hearing more about whose plans for the sequester are going to work," he said. The sequester is the $85 billion series of automatic spending cuts that kick in on March 1 if Congress does not act.

Europe will also be a factor as investors watch the run-up to the Italian election next weekend. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi also speaks at the European Parliament Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee Monday, when U.S. markets are closed for the President's Day holiday.

As for Italy, the election there is becoming an increasing concern for markets as former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi appears to have gained ground. "What's happening at the short end is Italian bonds have been underperforming Spanish bonds. There's a black out period for the polls," said Marc Chandler, head of foreign exchange strategy at Brown Brothers. "Partly, they're flying in the dark, and the problem is he's in favor of tax cuts."

Slow motion
The S&P 500 gained for a seventh week, but the advance was just 0.1 percent to 1519, and the Dow was down less than 0.1 percent at13,981. The Nasdaq was also lower by less than 0.1 percent, to 3192. But the small-cap Russell 2000 moved in a much bigger way and scored repeated new highs in the past week. It ended the week up 1 percent at 923.

"I think the tendency at the moment is to trade sideways to perhaps biased downward. I think to change that directionally, it's going to need something more macro," said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery. He said the market could be helped by some positive development on the "sequester" spending cuts, but analysts have been lowering the odds on any serious action by Congress.

The past week was marked by a sudden surge in takeover activity, including the planned $24 billion acquisition of Heinz by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Captial Management. US Air and American Airways also announced their long awaited merger, and Comcast in a surprise move, said it would buy the rest of NBC Universal from General Electric sooner than expected for $16.7 billion. NBC is the parent of CNBC.

Stocks involved in the deals moved on the news, as did some stocks in related sectors, like food, but the broader market did not budge.

"I think it's a little bit of a negative that the market is not a little more excited about it," said Laszlo Birinyi, president of Birinyi Associates. "Part of it is companies have so much cash and they're not getting paid to do anything with it."

Birinyi said he sees a chance that the S&P hits 1600 this year, and he remains bullish. "I'd feel better if the market did react a little more aggressively. On the other hand, I'm very pleased with how this market is holding in."

He said the rash of activism in the market is also apositive. "Anytime there's a disturbance that can bring focus to bear on an issue, I think it helps," he said. He said the activity is positive, even if he disagrees with the objections.

Dell's going private deal faces objections from shareholders over price, and Apple too is facing a test. Hedge-fund manager David Einhorn is suing Apple, seeking to block its shareholder vote on a proposal to eliminate the ability to issue preferred stock without investor approval. A hearing in the case is set for Tuesday in Manhattan.

Not So Glittery
Gold took a pounding in the past week, losing 3.4 percent to $1,609.50 per ounce.

"In a way, the same thing is happening with the great rotation," said Chandler, noting investors are taking cash and putting it to work in the equities market. "What they're reducing is cash and some of them think gold is a form of cash and there's money coming from gold, going into the stock market."

apart from liverpool/birmingham it's probably not a million miles from a player per population ratio, which would figure.

I see why Liverpool would be high in the list, football is a massive part of the city, more so that anywhere else in the country imo.

But there must be more than 10 geordies in the league?

I don't know for sure, but i'd imagine Sheffield and Bristol. Then like you say, Manchester and Birmingham. Cardiff/Glasgow (outside of England).

Then look how many more players are from Liverpool compared to the others (excluding London). The ratio compared to the other big cities is huge.
