Motherhood Moment: Healthy Habits: Being Thrifty without ...

With an unstable economy like this one, being thrifty
is wise. Do not look down on this though. On the contrary, you should
take it very seriously, because it is a skill that can provide you with a
healthy and safe life, without skimping on any of the necessities. It
is amazing
how you can save without ever skimping on the basic needs of your
family and home - and never compromising your family's health!

Grocery Shopping Tips
Coupons are your best allies when it comes to persevering on a budget. For instance, taking advantage of particular two-for-the-price-of-one sales, or buying items in bulk quantities and storing them for later, is a great way to save in the long term. It is more expensive to buy what you need at the time than buying in quantities and saving. Always compare prices on branded products, because from time to time, these items come out cheaper than you'd expect. Make a shopping list and stick to it, and never grocery shop when hungry, because you end up buying what you do not need, and that is where most money is wasted.

Shared Amusement

Today, the cost of the box office is extremely high, and usually you spend over 60 dollars for a family of four. It is much easier and fun to rent a movie on video and invite home a group of friends to share it with. This is a great idea and much more economical. Especially if you're including popcorn and sodas in the evening, staying home is always smarter.

Thrifty Rides

When you go on vacation with the family, even for a day at the beach, try not to buy anything to consume outside, as it will cost you money. Instead, take a cooler full of your favorite soft drinks or water to cool down, and some snacks. Being thrifty is not bad at all, eventually everyone will want to spend the same as you; almost nothing. A thrifty trip always pays back - because you can likely take another trip now! However, if you are staying in a hotel, try to book one with breakfast included. That way, you can collect some fruit after having breakfast, and take it with you for hours of snacks when hunger presses.

Save to Buy
First lesson - never buy with a credit card - you will end up paying much more. Always have cash when you go shopping, because this practice makes you stick to your budget. Search special offers for those items that would otherwise be very expensive. Do not buy impulsively either. This will lead to financial disaster. Keep your budget by buying only what you came for!

Eventually, being thrifty has its great reward. Probably that journey you are dreaming about, or that house you want to have one day. It is not about skimping on the necessary, it's a matter of knowing how to spend and save. This is the task of a well-coordinated family who knows how to save.
