Mac OS X Mountain Lion draws from iOS - Know Your Cell

Apple just released its Mac OS X Mountain Lion update and while we generally don't cover desktop platforms that much, we couldn't help but notice how many features were borrowed from iOS.?

When Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone, he said that the software powering the device was OS X. Apple has slowly backed away from that as we've seen more generations of its mobile devices and it's starting to become clear that iOS is where the company's forward-thinking ideas are landing.?

Because of this, it's not a surprise to see some of the iOS elements trickle up to the desktop OS. For example, the Twitter integration that landed in iOS 5?is now in Mountain Lion. It's very simple to send a tweet from nearly anywhere. Facebook integration is coming this fall for Mountain Lion and with iOS 6.

You can also look forward to having a notification center in Mountain Lion and this operates in a similar way as iOS but Apple has changed it enough to better make use of the device you're using. On a phone or tablet, the notification happens at the top and you have to pull down a menu. On the desktop or laptop, the notifcation happens in the top right corner and these notices are shown in an unobtrusive pane on the right side of the screen.?

Being able to toss an app from your iPhone or iPad to an Apple TV is pretty cool, and you can now do the same thing from your desktop via AirPlay. You can do AirPlay mirroring of nearly everything you're doing on your Mountain Lion computer, so this could change the way you do presentations, show off photos or watch Internet television.?

Apple's iCloud?is also going to get some deeper, system-wide integration, as you can have all your Mail, Contacts, Messages and more automatically backed up to the cloud. You also get the cool mobile apps Reminders and Notes on your desktop and these can be kept in sync with your mobile devices.?

Siri fans will be happy to know that Mountain Lion lets you use voice dictation for typing out of the box, and the early tests I've done have been pretty good. Gamers out there will also be able to take their Game Center accounts with them on the desktop.?

There are over 200 new features with Mountain Lion and we're still digging through them. Apple has a delicate job of merging iOS and OS X, but you can expect to see a lot more of this moving forward.?
