Invest Like the Pros: Use this Little-Known Tactic for Picking Stocks ...

One of my favorite things about self-directed stock investing is finding under the radar, niche methods of locating companies for potential investment. Sometimes these little known stock selection edges can pay off handsomely for investors not afraid to try something new. I am particularly partial to niche-type strategies that have stood the test of time and have proven themselves in rigorous testing.

Things are often not what they seem in the stock market with all the hubris, promotion and hype about certain investment strategies. This is why it?s crucial that every stock picking method be subjected to objective testing rather than simply relying on what everyone else is doing or saying.

The stock picking tactic I?m about to tell show you has been extensively researched by everyone from JP Morgan to major universities. One study of 300 companies by research firm McKinsey & Company showed that businesses meeting this criteria beat the overall market by an average of 10 percentage points. That said, only about 30 companies per year meet the criteria for this stock selection method. In addition, not every company that meets the criteria is a smart investment. Sometimes there is simply too much debt involved. Other times a company just plain fails in the marketplace. However, as evidenced by numerous studies, this is a tried-and-true method for finding winning stocks.

The method I am alluding to is spinoff investing.

Although not completely unknown, it definitely falls within the less common stock-picking tactics. A spinoff happens when a public company jettisons, or spins-off, one of its divisions or subsidiaries to create another publically-traded company. What?s important to know is why investing in spinoffs makes sense. One of the underlying reasons cited is that when a business (in this case, the newly spun-off company) is allowed to operate outside of the corporate structure that originally developed it, entrepreneurial forces come into play: managers, no longer limited by arcane corporate polices, are able to spread their wings. (Not to mention the management?s possible stock options acting as motivation for greater productivity.) These things unlock the value inherent within the spun-off company.

There are several ways to invest in spinoffs. The easiest is to purchase shares of the Guggenheim Spin-Off ETF (NYSE: CSD). This exchange-traded fund (ETF) boasts a three-year average return of 25.6% and is up 13.6% year to date. It follows the Beacon Spin-Off Index, comprised of spun-off companies.

If you prefer to work a little harder in finding spinoff stocks, the SEC Edgar Online database is an essential source. Every company that wants to spin-off an existing business must file SEC Form 10-12b. By doing a search for this form on Edgar, you will discover all potential spinoffs for investment consideration. Watching the financial media for spinoff reports is another time-tested way of locating future spinoff investment targets. For example, News Corp. (Nasdaq: NWSA) is expected to split into two companies in the near future. In addition, giant food company Kraft (Nasdaq: KFT) has revealed its intentions to break off its internationally-focused brands into a new company named Mondelez.

A few recently-completed spinoffs include L-3 Communications? (NYSE: LLL) former technical services division Engility (NYSE: EGL), and shipping company Matson Inc. (NYSE: MATX), which separated from parent Alexander & Baldwin (NYSE: ALEX) earlier this month. And while these spinoffs have already happened, you might find that there is still opportunity with these stocks. Savvy investors would be wise to keep a close eye on these and other spinoff opportunities.

Risks to Consider: As stated above, not every spinoff is a winner. While the odds favor solid performance from spinoffs, sometimes it just isn?t the case. These failures can be due to a variety of factors such as too much debt or limited support in the spinoff?s early stages. Always remember to use stops and position size accordingly, even with the spinoff edge, as anything can happen.

Action to Take ?> Practice finding companies ready to spin-off divisions by using the SEC Edgar database to search for SEC form 10-12b. This source can be a goldmine of potential and provide stock investors a solid edge in the market. Keep a close eye on the stocks listed above and watch the media for spinoff rumors ? sometimes just the rumor will move the stock of the parent company before the spinoff is even announced.

Windows 8 Security Garners Praise at Black Hat

LAS VEGAS -- Microsoft's Windows 8 is not yet generally available -- the operating system officially lands on store shelves Oct. 26 -- but that's not stopping security researchers from trying to find flaws in the OS. However, hackers who have had an easy time with Windows might find some new security features hard to beat.

For years, Windows has come under frequent attacks, thanks to hackers exploiting the operating system s heap memory manager. However, in a new report released at the Black Hat conference here, engineers at Microsoft have done an admirable job of defending memory, making it more difficult than ever before for attackers to exploit.

The report is called "Windows 8 Heap Internals."

Chris Valasek, a senior security researcher at Coverity and co-author of the research, explained the memory heap is a critical component of Windows. The memory manager is what tells applications that memory is or isn't available for use.

"As a security researcher, you want to look into how the memory is managed and see if there is the potential for a buffer overflow or some kind of exploit that could alter what the heap memory manager is supposed to do," said Valasek.

Heap memory exploitation attacks have been around for over a decade, and Valasek wanted to see what had changed in Windows 8. As it turns out, Valasek and his research partner Tarjei Mandt were not able to find as many deficiencies in Windows 8 memory. The two researchers believe that Microsoft has made a giant leap forward in heap memory security with Windows 8.

"While they have really stopped all the present exploitation techniques out there, they did have to introduce new code and data structures," said Valasek. "That new code, under certain conditions is susceptible to attack, as previous versions of Windows were."

Those conditions assume that an attacker has access to a software vulnerability that leads to some kind of writing outside of the bounds of the piece of memory that application is supposed to use.

"The deficiencies aren't quite corner cases, but they rely on a lengthy set of preconditions to occur," said Valasek. "That being said, things like this aren't impossible; it just so happens that you need to have a certain few things in place for your overflow for an attack to work."

In Windows 8, Microsoft engineers added a number of new prerequisites to the heap memory manager, making it more difficult to exploit.

"In previous versions of Windows you could say, allocate a bunch of memory, get a buffer overflow and the basic attack technique would work," said Valasek.

In contrast with Windows 8, Valasek said you would have to allocate some memory, but not too much, and then ensure that a few certain things don't occur and then run the overflow.

"Windows 8 definitely raises the bar and makes things harder to exploit," said Valasek. "At the same time, it's not entirely impossible."

In previous versions of Windows, Microsoft attempted to mitigate memory overflows with Data Execution Prevention (DEP) and Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR). While those techniques are helpful, Windows 8 goes a step further.

Spain's economy contracts third quarter in a row

MADRID (AP) ? Spain's National Statistics Institute says the Spanish economy remains mired in recession after contracting 0.4 percent in the second quarter of the year from the previous three month period.

It was the third consecutive contraction following the previous two 0.3 percent quarterly declines.

A technical recession is commonly defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.

The institute said Monday the second quarter decline was due to negative domestic demand, compensated somewhat by an increase in exports.

Spain with near 25 percent unemployment is struggling to avoid having to seek a financial bailout, as Greece, Ireland and Portugal have already done.

Arab Islamist fighters eager to join Syria rebels

REYHANLI, Turkey (Reuters) - Abdullah bin Shamar, a Saudi student, puts a small copy of the Koran among his few belongings packed neatly in a holdall as he prepares to set off with a Libyan friend across the hilly terrain separating southern Turkey from Syria.

"It is our duty to go to the great Bilad al Sham (Syria) and defend it against the Alawite tyrants massacring its people," said Bin Shamar, 22, a lightly bearded engineering major, who spoke to Reuters in Reyhanli, a Turkish town whose Arab inhabitants have historic links with Syria.

He and his friend are part of a small but growing influx of militant Arab Islamists determined to join the 16-month-old rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad. Their presence will alarm those in the West who have warned against al-Qaeda style militancy in Syria, whose conflict has the potential to spread sectarian strife far beyond its borders.

Bin Shamar and his Libyan friend Salloum say they are flowing the footsteps of their ancestors who fought in legions sent by the Prophet Mohammad at the dawn of Islam to liberate Greater Syria from those they regarded as Byzantine heathens.

Syria's 21st century heathens, they say, are Assad and his cohorts in the ruling elite from the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that has dominated the power structure of the Levantine country for the last five decades.

Sunni extremists, such as the foreign fighters now making their way to Syria, have a hatred for Assad's Alawites, whom they regard as infidels, as well as for Shi'ite Iran, which backs the Syrian leader.

"Syria's Muslim population has finally risen, after Assad and the Alawites pillaged Syria with the support of Iran and Hizbollah. Muslims everywhere cannot stand aside and do nothing to help the revolt," Bin Shamar said.

The two young middle class Arab youths, who first met in the British town of Brighton several years ago while attending a language course, arrived in Turkey this week.

They sensed a landmark change in the course of the revolt after the assassination of four of Assad's top lieutenants in Damascus on July 18, an event that encouraged bolder rebel attacks in Damascus and Aleppo, the country's commercial hub.

FOREIGN FIGHTERS

In the last few months, a steady flow of Arab men, including Libyans, Kuwaitis, Saudis as well as Muslims from Britain, Belgium and the United States, have joined Free Syrian Army forces, several rebel commanders in the northwest of Syria said.

They are forming what opposition sources describe as an accelerated, but still small, inflow of foreign fighters into the country. They include young Syrians who were born in the West and whose families fled persecution under Assad's rule.

Most have headed to the province of Hama, in central Syria, where a few Jihadists, or Muslim religious fighters, with experience in Afghanistan have been giving them rudimentary training in handling assault rifles and guerrilla warfare.

Hundreds of foreign Jihadists, opposition sources say, now operate in the city of Hama, a major centre of the anti-Assad rebellion. Some have gone to fight in Damascus, but their numbers are too small to alter a balance of power overwhelmingly in favor of Assad's forces, rebel sources said.

Several reported massacres of Sunni villagers and the bombardment of mosques are fuelling a hatred of the Alawites that has prompted some Sunni scholars to start preaching in support of jihad, or holy struggle, in Syria.

A Western diplomat following the movement of foreign fighters to Syria likened them to the European idealists who headed to Spain in 1936 to help fight against General Francisco Franco, but were ultimately no match for the dictator's forces.

Salloum said he fought with Libyan rebels in the battle of Zawiya, near Tripoli, before the fall of Muammar Gaddafi last year. He declined to disclose where he was going in Syria, but said it was his religious duty to help Syrians in need.

"Our Syrian brothers need any help they can get, because unlike in Libya, the international community has abandoned them.

"They welcome us and are eagerly waiting for us. We want to tell them, you are not alone in this fight to liberate this land from the tyranny of the minority," said Salloum, 24 who said he had dropped out of Libya's Tripoli University, where he was studying chemistry.

Salloum, who planned to join a unit called the Ahrar al-Sham brigades, said participating in jihad was one of his highest aspirations as a Muslim. Rebel sources said most of the foreign fighters had joined this unit, including Mohammad Salem al-Harbi, a young Saudi cleric who is believed to have been killed this week.

"VICTORY COMES FROM ALLAH"

"We have been following the successes of our Syrian mujahedeen (fighters) in recent weeks. Victory comes from Allah," he added, sitting on a mattress, where two new sets of walkie-talkies lay in a corner along with an iPhone and other communications equipment.

Rebels say the conflict in Syria has angered many Sunni Arabs, who see it as an Alawite military campaign to ethnically cleanse Syria and create a pure Alawite state stretching from the Mediterranean coast to central regions of the country.

"The Alawites are acting with vengeance. They have been fooled by Assad into believing that this is a life or death war for them and if the Sunnis win they see themselves as being doomed," Salloum said.

"Look at their hatred," Salloum said, referring to a video widely circulated by Syrian activists that purportedly shows Alawite pro-Assad militiamen, known as shabbiha, using a knife to slit the throat of a handcuffed young rebel male in Idlib in what Sunnis say reveals deep seated sectarian grudges.

"The Alawites have taken over everything in Syria, political power, the economy, the state jobs, and now they want to continue enslaving our Sunni brothers and sisters, they tell them your God is Assad," said Bin Shamer.

Assad has consistently maintained that the insurgency is largely the work of those he refers to as foreign-backed terrorists and his forces are acting to restore stability.

Perhaps sensitive to the concerns of their backers in the West, Syrian rebel leaders say that while the Arab jihadists slowly trickling in are welcome, their numbers are negligible and they are motivated by idealism and piety.

Their presence will not change the complexion of the insurgency, a home-grown uprising fuelled by Syrians rebelling against years of oppression, rebel leaders say.

"They are mostly youths disgusted by the regime's sectarian killings. They carry the banner of Islamic unity and they come to Syria as idealists, often without training or tangible combat experience," said Younis Khader, commander of a rebel battalion called the "Grandchildren of the Prophet" in the Anadan region, west of Aleppo.

Khader cited the case of Saber al-Haji, a Libyan student of Islamic jurisprudence who joined the rebels as a fighter and was killed in Aleppo.

"We had great respect for al-Haji. He was a man of religion and his devotion to Islam is primarily why he was a model for many of us," he said. "May God's mercy fall on him and a place him among the martyrs."

How to Earn Trust When Distrust Rules

TrustOrganizations have been facing a challenge for several years now: a lack of trust among people regarding what they say, the messages they spread and how they act. Relationships are based upon trust. Although the levels and types of trust are different, this goes for business relationships as well. Trust and reputation go hand in hand and are directly related to the intensity and value of the relationship between a business and its? customers and other partners.

Trust regarding what businesses say and do has been decreasing. It?s one of the reasons why many marketers try to embrace social media and a more conversational style in their customer-oriented tactics.

Trust is fundamental in all sorts of relationships. However, it?s also a very fluffy word, and it shouldn?t be taken too lightly. It is related to honesty and fairness. It is also related to competence in which case it is maybe better to call it confidence.

Anyway, no matter how intangible trust and confidence are, we do know they matter more than ever in business. Faceless and big companies are looked upon with distrust. It?s an evolution that has been going on for years, especially since communication essentially often was company-oriented and more a monologue than a dialogue. Social media enabled people to voice their opinions in very public ways and to have more control over how they interact with businesses regarding the when, where and how and regardless of the reasons why.

This phenomenon contributed to the need of business to be more customer-centric, listen to their customers and move from monologues to dialogues, dropping the ivory tower and faceless mentality. Social media did not cause this; it just speeded up the process. People already were losing trust in ads, corporate messages and businesses in general. Proof: we skip ads on TV because we can, and we increasingly ignore emails, certainly when not personalized, and banners on the Web, a phenomenon called ?banner blindness?. Smart organizations understood this and realized they had to put their customer first and find other ways to provide value and generate more revenue, instead of broadcasting messages, promoting only themselves. Putting the customer at the heart of what we do, also known as customer-centricity, is one of the key fundamentals of social media and business success.

Trust in relationships is not a new topic. For marketers, however, it often seems to be. It?s probably because they undervalue the relational dimension. No, your customer does not want to be your friend. But you do have a relationship with him and trust always matters since relationships and their strength always do.

Trust and personality

The basis of regaining trust in relationships, is obviously having a relationship to start with. And the stronger and more personal it is the more valuable it becomes. Furthermore, people are not isolated but connected and the strength of more ?social? relationships travels fast in a connected reality. The basis of a strong relationship is personality. People see a brand and business as a whole but the reputation of the brand is the result of many contact moments or so-called touchpoints. By making these more personal, trust grows.

The essence of a business is not what it sells or says it does. It?s the people that work for it, the people that buy and all others in the so-called ecosystem, such as partners and ? in a social and connected reality ? the relationships of their relationships. The personality of a brand is constituted by the personal voices of all people representing and connecting with it.

Four ways to regain trust

Reconnecting your brand means earning attention of people, but most of all it means earning trust. Here are four ways to regain trust as I recently posted them in a guest post for one of our customers.

1. Be clear and transparent

Many organizations can be more transparent than they are today, opening themselves up for interaction and participation. More important than transparency is clarity: what are your intentions and promises when interacting and doing business with people? What can they really expect? The need for clarity applies to numerous domains. Think about handling the personal data of your customers, for instance, and the need of a clear privacy policy. Privacy increasingly becomes something that needs to be earned. However, clarity is also about making the customer experience as transparent and evident as possible: no unexpected surprises and removing everything that stands in the way of people fulfilling their needs. That?s what user-friendliness is about. Finally, clarity is also about your promises. People expect something when entering in a marketing or other business relationship. It?s important to set these expectations right and not overpromise. At the same time, it?s essential to make sure that expectations are clear in order to avoid disappointment.

2. When trust meets conversions: live up to your promises

Once the mutual expectations are set, and people know how you will deal with their data, follow up on their questions or any sort of interaction and transaction, it?s important to live up to these promises and expectations. It?s the basis of trust but also of branding and conversion optimization. In the end, conversions and business transactions only happen when there is a level of trust. Even social sharing and content sharing in general requires trust. For lesser-known brands that is sometimes a challenge, but it doesn?t have to. The other way around, sometimes bigger brands can have trust challenges that smaller competitors don?t have. Using different ways to establish credibility and trust is essential in optimizing conversions. However, the key differentiator is to actually live up to what you promise by using them.

3. Keep the multi-channel lines open

No one is perfect. Living up 200% to promises and proving perfect customer experiences is a goal to strive towards. However, things happen, after all we are human beings. Even if you?re totally clear and do everything you can to live up to your promises, something can go wrong. Your product can be DOA. Someone in your marketing team can make an error, leading to a situation in which the expectations are not met and promises are broken. This is why it?s important to allow people to get in touch with you fast and across the channels they prefer to use. Customer service is about customers and about making sure that the expectations are met. However, it?s also about being there when things do go wrong and even before they can go wrong. Watching over potential errors or unmet promises and, more importantly, talking about them by being attentive, listening to feedback, monitoring, surveying and responding in a?clear and transparent way, is essential to regain trust and reconnect your brand. Good analysis to understand the hurdles and potential problems when interacting with customers and prospects is part of this as well.

4. Nurture the relationship: going beyond trust

Even the happiest and most loyal customer can become upset once you stop paying attention to him. The other way around, there are always people with high buying potential in your list that never become good customers because they are overlooked and don?t receive what they need to go beyond basic trust and become loyal customers or even advocates. Generating revenue is directly related to providing value. In impersonal approaches, whereby a single customer view is lacking; it?s nearly impossible to offer the value, information or simply tools, contacts, interactions and services your customers want. To achieve that single view, integrating customer and marketing data across contact moments is a must, tapping into all your data sources to give you a central 360? customer view. People also want to voice their opinions now and then, so invite them to, for instance, via surveys and other feedback mechanisms. Obviously, developing a relationship in marketing is also about lead nurturing, which is about content, offers, scenarios etc. but most of all about caring, in the end what nurturing means.

These four tips are really not about marketing and business alone. In fact, you could apply them to human relationships in general: talk, listen, be clear, do what you promise, etc? However, in marketing we sometimes forget them or simply don?t have the processes and tools to make it all happen.

Parent's guide to social media for teens | Lagos Mums

The contemporary world in which we live in is a far cry from what it used to be a few years back in terms of social media.?Many years back only the rich and affluent could afford telephones?but today, primary school kids have cell phones.?The global village in which?we live invloves children and so it is not?unusal that children have become the cust

We no longer know MEDIA to be TV and Radio? the options have been spiced up and what is called social media is the new order for communication on the go. This new style of communication has no doubt come to stay.

Life is much more interesting as social media has bridged many a gap but be that as it may, we need to excersise caution particularly when the kids are concerend. We need to keep abreast of the kind of virtual relationships our children keep because those are the hardest to monitor. You can easily invite your kid?s friend over to the house to judge/test his/her character but it will be difficult to request a chat with your kids? friend on facebook.

There are so many potential risks associated with social media use for tweens and teens. Even if your children will be responsible, the people they connect with might not be. That?s one of the the main problems, especially with high school kids. They have no idea of all that can go wrong or how they put themselves at risk.

If you have a plan to monitor your child?s page, keep in mind that FB?s new privacy settings let us select who sees what we post. So if children want to keep you from seeing something, they can exclude you, and you would never know. The same thing goes for people who post to their wall. They can select who sees it.

It is best to have a rule to never share or make public any information that would identify where you live, where they go to school, their age, phone?number or email address and when you are away from home (because their friends will know where you live).?It would?be good to avoid posting pictures, with possible exception of with friends. I would suggest not allowing other people to tag your child in photos or ?check in? to places.

Additionally, your child should be made aware of the seriousness of cyber-bullying. It?s a really huge problem and we all should come up with plans to deal with it if it happens.

Nichole Brown, Corporate Communications Manager at Ogilvy & Mather advises that?we should have our children?s passwords until?we are?comfortable with their interactions with others.

PFT: Some Bucs can't do 16 110-yard sprints

Jets rookie WR Stephen Hill is drawing praise for doing a lot of what he likely will be doing this year:? blocking.

Pats WR Donte? Stallworth returns to New England having ?matured as a player, matured as a person.?? (Killing a guy while driving a car under the influence tends to do that.)

The goal for getting a new lease in place for the Bills officially has been moved to the end of the year.

When it comes to hairstyles, Dolphins rookies are sporting the modified Cruella deVille.

With WR Antonio Brown and not WR Mike Wallace getting a new contract from the Steelers, Snoop Dogg may need an explanation.

Browns DT Ahtyba Rubin is recovering from a procedure to repair a slight pelvic tear.

Bengals LB Brandon Joiner is on the reserve/did not report list for a good reason; he?s serving a three-year prison sentence in Texas.? (Shouldn?t they have traded him to the Lions by now?)

Is Michael Oher finally ready to play left tackle?? (With Bryant McKinnie AWOL, it may not matter.)

The Jaguars have released FB Naufahu Tahi.? (Brad Childress wants to know why they didn?t they just make him the extra man on the roster.)

Colts coach Chuck Pagano?s first training camp as head coach opens on Saturday.

Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck put business first in the offseason; ?I played it more safe and I didn?t really travel,? Hasselbeck said. ?I didn?t really go anywhere for fun.? Everywhere I went, I had a purpose.? If I was going somewhere, then throwing and working out was priority No. 1 all the time.?

Texans LB Connor Barwin has traded in the Cosmo Kramer for the Gary Kubiak.

A jury has awarded $5.2 million against Chargers doctor David Chao for prescribing a cold-therapy device after knee surgery; Chao has now been on the wrong end of multiple malpractice cases.? (But, please, keep letting him provide care to elite professional athletes.)

Broncos LB Von Miller thinks that the team?s seventh defensive coordinator in seven seasons is ?laid back?; Jack Del Rio says Miller and the rest of the defense are in for a surprise.

The Torn ACL Trio (Eric Berry, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki) all practiced for the Chiefs on Friday; ?I feel I?ve got my swag back,? Charles said.

Here are five questions for the Raiders.

Our old pal (and former PFT contributor) Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com tears into Cowboys WR Dez Bryant for keeping his mouth shut in the wake of his recent arrest.

Giants co-owner John Mara was surprised by the number of media at training camp: ??I can?t believe so many of you are here.? Tebow isn?t here.?

Former Redskins QB Colt Brennan has been arrested in Hawaii for suspicion of drunk driving and drug possession.

Eagles TE Brent Celek (knee) is expected to miss only a few days.

A lawsuit against former Vikings WR and current ESPN analyst Cris Carter involving a rap-song investment gone bad contends that Carter was close to becoming the Alabama receivers coach in 2011.? (It?s unknown whether Carter ever declared, ?I?m not going to be the Alabama receivers coach.?)

Bears K Robbie Gould thinks it would be a ?big risk? for the team to let LB Brian Urlacher become a free agent.? (It also would be a ?big risk? for the Bears to make personnel decisions based on the advice of a kicker.)

Packers LT Marshall Newhouse is gaining confidence via praise from his coach ? and practice against LB Clay Matthews.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson apparently can?t walk down the street in Mexico.? (Sergio Mendes can sympathize.)

Newly re-signed Falcons LB Mike Peterson is now known as ?Unc?; ?I?m everybody?s uncle around here now,? Peterson said.

Saints CB Patrick Robinson made the play of the day on Friday, stealing a Drew Brees pass away from TE Jimmy Graham.

Falcons RB Jason Snelling wants more opportunities on offense.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera hopes increased competition will create increased urgency in training camp; among other things, both kicking positions are up for grabs.

The mentor of 49ers LB Aldon Smith says that his off-field problems will be a ?small blip on his radar.?? (If getting stabbed twice is a small blip on the radar, that?s a big-ass radar.)

The Cardinals are holding their annual Red-White Scrimmage on Saturday.? (QB Kevin Kolb may want to wear ear plugs.)

Rams TE Michael Hoomanawanui is able to practice after suffering a torn ACL on November 13.

Will the Seahawks quarterback competition be reduced from three to two?? ?The answer is yes, I guess,? coach Pete Carroll said.? ?You?re just going to have to suck it up and wait.?

Arizona deputy says he risked life for illegal immigrant

PHOENIX (Reuters) - A deputy from a controversial Arizona sheriff's office countered accusations of racial profiling on Thursday, telling a court that he had risked his life to rescue a Latino illegal immigrant from armed kidnappers.

Carlos Rangel told a civil trial alleging Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio that, at the behest of federal immigration police, he went undercover to play the role of the immigrant's relative to meet kidnappers, one of whom pointed a gun at him.

The kidnappers were arrested and the immigrant was released.

Asked by defense lawyer Tom Liddy, Rangel if he was an "anti-Hispanic bigot", Rangel answered: "No. I am not."

Arpaio, who styles himself "America's toughest sheriff," and his office are defendants in a class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Phoenix that will test whether police can target illegal immigrants without racially profiling Hispanic citizens and legal residents.

The 80-year-old lawman testified this week he was against racial profiling and denied his office arrested people because of the color of their skin.

The sheriff, who is seeking re-election to a sixth term in November, has been a lightning rod for controversy over his aggressive enforcement of immigration laws in the state, which borders Mexico, as well as his investigation into the validity of President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

Arizona was in the news last month when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a key element of the state's crackdown on illegal immigrants requiring police to investigate those they stop and suspect of being in the country illegally.

Arpaio faces a separate, broader lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department in May, alleging systematic profiling, sloppy and indifferent police work and a disregard for minority rights.

'RUDE' AND 'MOCKING'

The civil lawsuit was lodged in the name of Manuel Ortega Melendres, one of five Hispanics who say they were stopped by deputies because they were Latino, which Arpaio denies. It was later opened to all Latino drivers stopped since 2007.

Melendres, a Mexican tourist on a valid visa in a truck was pulled over ostensibly because the white driver was speeding.

Rangel, who arrested Melendres, was asked by plaintiffs' counsel if he had questioned the driver. He told the court he had no grounds to investigate the driver.

When asked by Liddy if he had ever racially profiled anyone while working at the sheriff's office, Rangel, a 13-year veteran of the force, replied: "No".

In later testimony, a Hispanic woman who is a U.S. citizen told the court she was pulled over by a sheriff's deputy in 2009 on suspicion she had drugs, alcohol and weapons in her car as she drove home from studying at a Phoenix valley university.

Despite telling the deputy she was pregnant, Lorena Escamilla said, she was thrown roughly onto the back seat of his patrol car. A subsequent search of her car did not find any drugs. While she was cited for failure to produce identification and not having insurance, charges against her were dropped.

Escamilla said she later filed a charge of assault with Phoenix police department against the deputy and has since been fearful of being pulled over by the officer.

Also testifying was a Hispanic mother who was in a vehicle with a group of Boy Scouts that was pulled over in 2009 by a deputy for speeding while returning from the Grand Canyon.

Diona Solis, who is also a U.S. citizen, said the deputy was "rude" and "mocking" and unnecessarily requested identification from the boys in the car aged 8 to 11, among them her son.

"The boys were minors ... I thought it was unreasonable to ask them for IDs ... they hadn't done anything wrong," she said.

10 little-known stories about the Olympics

What does it take to record 116 years of summer Olympics history? For author-researcher David Wallechinsky, who basically owns the ?franchise? when it comes to chronicling the world?s largest sports gatherings event by event, it requires 1,334 pages in a nearly 2-1/2-inch thick volume: The Complete Book of the Olympics, 2012 Edition. This impressive work, co-authored by Jaime Loucky, lists not only the results of every single event from the decathlon to windsurfing, it also carries summaries of each Olympics, medal standings, short explanations about each sport and even information about discontinued sports and events such as cricket and rope climbing. Digging into its nooks and crannies leads to some interesting discoveries. Here are 10 worth sharing.

- Ross Atkin,?Staff Writer

The Seine in Paris

Charles Platiau/Reuters

1. Women in the Olympics

At the second modern Olympics, held in Paris in 1900, women competed for the first time. Their participation, however, was hardly a test of ?faster, higher, stronger, ? since the 21 women were entered in croquet and golf. Chicago socialite Margaret Abbott became the first US woman gold medalist when she shot a 47 in the final nine-hole round of the golf competition. Because of the less formal nature of the competition (some women played in high heels), Abbott never realized that her victory was considered part of the Olympics. ?Another reflection of the unique nature of these Olympics is that the swimming events were held in the Seine, where an obstacle race was on the program and the river current contributed to the fast times.

Hope Mrs. Shultz tries alternatives and beats cancer. Essiac has been known to cure terminal cancer. Good friend had a brain tumor which was changing behavior and sticking out like a marble on the back of her head. Used poultices applied to the area consisting of olive oil and turmeric . Shrank 80%. Google turmeric on Dr. Mercola's website..it actually changes the DNA of cancerous cells.

Knockout by Suzanne Summers has some awesome alternatives too.

I am so sorry to hear that Wendy is forced to take this journey. My aunt passed away from ovarian cancer a little over 25 years ago when I was a teenager. My cousin was diagnosed 5 years ago. What a difference 20 years make! My cousins surgery and chemo was successful and she has since been certified as a nutritionist who dedicates herself to helping cancer survivors lead healthy lives, thereby extending their lives. She has had 5 years of cancer free follow-ups and I see that trend continuing for many decades to come.

I figured something was terribly wrong when Ed took so much time off and as much as his listeners and viewers love and need his voice, there is someone who needs him even more and I hope they both know that we all are keeping both of them in our thoughts. I hope she will be telling her success story 5 years from now. My cousins success shows that this journey, while definitely a hard one, can result in footnote in time down the road. Big hugs to her and Ed!

There is a wonderful book I would recommend for both of you to read - Doctor's Orders, Go Fishing by Dean Shrock, PhD. It's a wonderful, uplifting and spirtural book for cancer patients. With some good luck and the right treatment Wendy can beat her ovarian cancer. Wendy and her relatives must learn about Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. Testing may help guide Wendy's treatment and possibly save other women in her family too.

Take care of business Ed. We'll be there waiting for you when your wife recovers from her cancer treatments. She needs you now, more than ever. I'm going thru chemo now for BC and there are a lot of scarey times ahead. Since you live not as far from Chicago as I do, I urge you to atleast look into the Block Treatment Center. He uses chemo in unconventional ways...e.g. administering chemo when it is most effective using circadian rhythms. A woman with ovarian CA in my town (and who has the money to fly there very frequently) is doing well, years later, seeing Dr. Block. He also puts a heavy emphasis on nutrition. He combines conventional with the alternative. Look for his book too.

We'd like to thank those whose empathy and humanity produced words of sympathy and encouragement to Ed and Wendy --- sentiments that we, of course, share and extend to both.

When faced with a personal crisis of this magnitude, the course of treatment and recovery can seem overwhelming. It can be manageable only if Ed and Wendy take up the fight one day and one treatment session at a time.

Our hopes for a speedy recovery are with you, Ed and Wendy.

Cabbage Soup Diet ? Food and Drinks

When it comes to losing weight there are many different diets to chose from. In fact, there are often so many choices that it can be difficult to get started. Yet, by choosing a weight loss program and sticking with it, you can better guarantee a successful outcome.

The cabbage soup diet has been around for some time now. Many people in fact swear by it as a means to lose weight quickly.

The cabbage soup diet is designed as a way to help you lose weight through the cleansing power of cabbage. You are allowed to eat fruits, veggies, some meat and one day of rice as well on varying days of the diet.

The cabbage soup can be made in varying ways. Try using half a head of cabbage, some onions, some chicken stock or broth, celery, bell peppers and a can or two of tomatoes.

Add or remove these vegetables as your taste suits. Also you can add any spices you like to the recipe for flavour.

The diet purports to allow you to lose a whopping ten pounds in one week! While this may seem unlikely, many people have reported very good success with this diet.

The cabbage soup diet is composed of eating the special type of cabbage soup described above. Alongside this soup, you are also allowed to eat some fruits and vegetables, and a little bit of rice and meat on occasion.

You are also told to drink at least four glasses of water per day. The diet works because of a reduced caloric intake alongside the benefits that come from eating a low fat, high fibre diet.

The diet should only be undertaken for seven days at a time.

It is therefore not designed as a permanent diet option, but merely as a means to kick start your weight loss.

Day One: On the first day of the diet you are allowed to eat all the fruit you desire excluding bananas as well as your cabbage soup. You are also allowed unsweetened teas, or water or cranberry juice.

Day Two: Day two of the diet involves eating all vegetables alongside your cabbage soup. No fruit is allowed on this day, but you are allowed one baked potato for dinner.

Day Three: On day three you are able to eat your soup as usual, as well as both fruits and vegetables. However, you are not allowed your baked potato today.

Day Four: On day four your diet consists of eating just bananas and skim milk. You can also still have your soup. Eat as many as six bananas if you like and drink as much skim milk as you want.

Day Five: Day five of the diet involves eating up to twenty ounces of beef and six fresh tomatoes. This day you need to be especially on top of drinking all your water in order to get rid of the uric acid from your body.

Eat your soup today as well, at least twice. You can also substitute broiled chicken (without skin) or fish for the beef. You cannot however eat two different types of meat. Choose only one and eat it up to the allotted twenty ounces.

Day Six: On this day you can eat both meat and vegetables alongside your soup. Chose one meat as described above and eat lots of veggies. When eating veggies however try to avoid those ones high in starch. This means no potatoes, not yams and probably go easy on the carrots.

Day Seven: On day seven you can add brown rice to your diet. Eat as much of it as you like and eat your soup as well.

Day seven is the last day of the diet and you can eat as much of the soup and rice as you like. You can also eat vegetables and unsweetened fruit juices as described above.

After this week you should see very noticeable results. Most people will have lost between 5-7 pounds in the week, though many people have lost as much as ten pounds in the mere seven days.

The key to success in this diet is to follow the rules exactly and drink plenty of water. You can also take a good quality multivitamin to ensure that you aren?t missing any of the nutrients your body needs.

Remember, that though this is a great way to get started with your weight loss plan, it is not a diet designed for long term use. A week is the recommended amount of time and going beyond this is not suggested.

Because the diet is only a week however it can make it more feasible for those who have trouble sticking to diet and weight loss plans. Just make sure that after the seven days you keep up a healthy diet and add regular exercise to your week in order to ensure lasting results.
