Holiday fitness gifts trend from high-tech to basic

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Looking for the perfect holiday present for a fitness fan? Gift offerings this year range from apps that can store a run in the country to be viewed later to gadgets so sophisticated they measure quality of sleep as well as calories burned.

There is also the revival of the humble foam roller, which experts say, like old-time push-ups, squats and planks, has never been more popular.

Anita Golden, fitness manager at a Crunch gym in New York City, said she'll be giving clients a foam roller called the GRID.

"We've always had foam rollers in the club but now more people are using them as a way to ease post-workout muscles, prevent injuries and exercise the core," Golden said.

When it comes to big-ticket items, Colleen Logan of Icon Health and Fitness, which manufactures a number of fitness brands, said the treadmill remains the most popular gift.

"Treadmills continue to lead the industry in terms of home fitness purchases," said Logan.

They account for about 57 percent of fitness purchases, while elliptical trainers and stationary bicycles are a distant second and third place at about 8 percent each.

The average home treadmill costs about $700, said Logan, but the technology revolution has transformed even this stalwart at the high end.

The ultimate splurge, at $4,000, she said, is the Boston Marathon Treadmill, which allows users to adjust speed in 1/10 of a mile per hour increments without touching the console. It also lets users run a virtual Boston Marathon.

For people on a smaller budget, there is the iFit app that lets the iPhone capture a favourite vacation run or bike ride in Hawaii, store it in data centres all over the world which collectively are referred to as the "cloud," and download it to an iFit-enabled treadmill at home.

"You'll view the exact route and experience the same terrain again," Logan explained.

Devices, gadgets and apps proliferate as tech-savvy fitness becomes more accessible, according to Jessica Matthews of the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

"There's a lot of interest in on-body monitoring devices as ways to motivate and track progress," she said. "They run the gamut from basic devices to track hours, steps, and caloric expenditure to full-body tracking."

Nike+ Sportsband has a series of small lights on the wrist band that change from red to green as the runner nears his goal, while the BodyMedia FIT Armband tracks everything from the number of calories burned to the quality and quantity of sleep.

ACE also studied fitness DVDs released for the holidays.

"We evaluated them for quality of instruction, safety, effectiveness and design of workout," Matthews said.

Among the best were "Amy Dixon's Breathless Body Vol.2: The Edge." Matthews called it a challenging cardio workout best suited to those on your list with "an established base of fitness."

"Jessica Smith's 10 Pounds Down Better Body Blast" also got a thumbs up for its well-rounded routine and clarity of instruction.

For people seeking a mind-body approach, Matthews praised "STOTT Pilates Intense Body Blast: Pilates Interval Training: Level I," which she said is accessible for someone new to fitness.

"They do a great job queuing movements and creating flow," she said.

Richard Cotton of the American College of Sports Medicine suggests giving the fitness novice the gift of a personal trainer.

"The best is human assistance," he said. "Another way is a beginner group exercise class."

He also suggests a gift certificate for shoes at a running store equipped with a treadmill.

"You need shoes that fit your gait," he said. "People should always get their gait analyzed."

Golden likes to cite the law of reciprocity to the personal trainers she manages.

"I always tell them to get their clients something," she said.

And what does the personal trainer want for Christmas?

"I like the roller, or a new jump rope," she said. "Fitness people aren't hard to please. Get me a new yoga mat and I'm happy."

Twitter - A New Age For Customer Service ~ Social Business Today

Photo: Courtesy of Sanda Belaire

Social media has offered a new way for businesses to interact with both current and potential customers.?Sanda Belaire, a manager at Nordstrom?s flagship store in Seattle, knows firsthand how beneficial it is to form these online relationships. She has used her socially savvy skills to promote both the company she works for and herself professionally.

Utilizing Twitter, Sanda has increased social media interactions for Nordstrom and grown her own following. Check out this 1:1 interview for an inside look at how one of the largest department stores in the country utilizes social media. Sanda lends useful advice on growing a Twitter following both as a company and personally, how to best use Twitter as a customer service tool and more.

Sanda:?My Nordstrom career began 25 years ago and over that time I have worked at 5 Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores. I?m passionate about people and fashion, which falls directly in line with the Nordstrom culture. We are encouraged to be owners of our own business and social media has been a great way to listen to existing customers as well as connect with new customers.

Q: Sanda, can you tell us a little bit about your professional background including how you got into your current profession and how you began incorporating social media into your career?

In 2009 Nordstrom employees were given the opportunity to use social media professionally. I was already using Twitter in my personal life, but as a Personal Stylist Manager, I found it was an effective way to spread the message about Nordstrom?s complimentary Personal Styling service. It quickly became my way of connecting with customers on a day-to-day basis.

Today I use Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest to share anything I?m excited about throughout the store and social media has become an integral part of my day. If a fabulous Christian Louboutin shoe or Alexander Wang dress comes in, I want to share it immediately and social media enables me to do that.

On a personal note, I find that Twitter is the most effective and timely way to receive information. As a working mom, reading my Twitter timeline is the best way to know what?s going on in the world. Twitter is the fastest way to get breaking news, from the people who are there as it?s happening in real time.

Q: In many cases, Twitter seems to be an extension of a company?s customer service department. In putting yourself out there as a representative for Nordstrom, how do you handle unhappy customers?

Sanda:?At Nordstrom we are empowered to do whatever it takes to make the customer happy. We listen to their problem, try to find a solution by using good judgment and respond in the best way we can.

We know that the definition of customer service is changing and today many want to be served through social media. Customers can tweet at Nordstrom or their salesperson anytime with their needs or questions. I try to respond as soon as I am able. In the past I?ve found merchandise, connected salespeople, suggested the right shoes and gifts through Twitter as well as met fabulous people.

Social media is continuing to redefine service and we are here to listen to our customers ? happy or unhappy.

(AP) ? The Fiesta Bowl will be in the rotation when a playoff system replaces the BCS.

The 2013 game might provide a glimpse of what a playoff in the desert might look like.

Oregon and Kansas State, teams still in the national-title picture just two weeks ago, will meet at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale on Jan. 3, giving the Fiesta Bowl a second straight marquee matchup of teams in the top 5 of the BCS standings.

The Ducks (11-1), with Heisman Trophy contender Kenjon Barner and all those fleet-footed players against the gritty Wildcats (11-1) and their own Heisman-worthy quarterback, Collin Klein.

Yeah, this should be good, maybe even better than last year.

The 2012 Fiesta Bowl was certainly a memorable one: Oklahoma State vs. Stanford, Nos. 3 and 4 in the BCS, dynamic teams with two of the nation's best quarterbacks in Brandon Weeden and the Cardinal's Andrew Luck.

The game matched the hype, with the Cowboys outlasting Stanford 41-38 in overtime, giving the Fiesta Bowl a much-needed boost after nearly losing its BCS status due to financial improprieties and a dud of a game in 2011.

Oregon and Kansas State, Nos. 4 and 5 in the BCS standings, have the potential to one-up 2012.

Oregon, No. 5 in the AP Top 25, has been one of the nation's best teams under coach Chip Kelly, using its swarm-of-bees offense to reach the BCS title game in 2011 and win the Rose Bowl for the first time in 95 years last season.

The Ducks were one of the front-runners to reach the title game again this season, steamrolling opponents through their first 10 games with what may be the nation's most unstoppable offense.

The Wildcats' run was a little more surprising.

Kansas State, seventh in the AP poll, opened some eyes by trouncing Miami in its second game and started to draw national attention by knocking off Oklahoma in Norman on Sept. 22. Behind the do-everything Klein and its tough defense, the Wildcats kept piling up wins and rising up the rankings.

After defending national champion Alabama lost to Texas A&M on Nov. 10, Kansas State moved up to No. 1 in the BCS standings and Oregon was No. 2.

All the Wildcats and Ducks had to do was win their final two games and they would almost assuredly play in the BCS title game.

They ended up losing on the same day, turning the BCS on end.

Kansas State fell flat under the pressure, run over 52-24 by unranked Baylor. The Ducks couldn't get their high-flying offense going against Stanford and lost 17-14 in overtime.

That moved Notre Dame up to No. 1 and put the SEC back in the BCS championship picture.

With its win over No. 3 Georgia this weekend, the Crimson Tide earned a spot in Miami on Jan. 7 to face the Fighting Irish for the national title.

Kansas State bounced back to beat Texas 42-24 on Saturday night, sending Wildcat fans rushing onto the field after the school earned its third conference championship in 117 years.

Oregon closed out its regular season a week earlier, rolling over No. 16 Oregon State 48-24 in the Civil War to keep its BCS bowl hopes alive.

The Wildcats and Ducks won't play for a national championship, but they sure gave the Fiesta Bowl a boost with another matchup that could be the 1A to the title game.

"India will be an important market for us" - Edmon Chung, CEO ...

In the last 6 years, there have been a lot of geography-specific top-level domain names that have been in the offering. This has done a great deal for a lot of local businesses as names which would have been taken under the .com domains were available again under different domains, helping them vastly with their online presence and marketing.

DotAsia is one such option for organizations with an Asia outlook. It was approved by ICANN on 19 October 2006 and it serves as a regional domain for companies, organizations, and individuals based in the region of Asia, Australia, and the Pacific.

DotAsia is a non-profit organization, where most of the profits from the sales of the .asia domain go to community causes centered on the internet. Here, we chat with Edmon Chung, CEO of the DotAsia organisation, on the topics of business, community, trends and plans for India.

[Edited Excerpts]

YS: In an already diverse and specific top level domain space, what makes DotAsia work?
EC: Well, DotAsia?s benefits are twofold. Firstly, using region specific domain names is not a good idea in all places. For example, it is not a good idea for a Japanese company to come into China using the .JP domain and vice versa. So using the .asia domain gives an organization a somewhat neutral name and it also speaks about the company?s focus area.

The second reasons is to do with search engine optimization. Many people don?t know that Google ranks top level domains higher than .com domains for a local search. For example, in India, the .in domain is ranked first, .asia second and .com third. This is the case in all countries in Asia where the region specific domain name comes first and then .asia. So being second in every country in asia, cumilatively gives it the highest SEO rank for an Asia based business on Google?s search engine.

YS: How has the adoption of this domain name increased over time and what are some key factors affecting it?
EC: The adoption for .asia has been steady and growing organically over time. ?While DotAsia Organisation is a not-for-profit initiative, the income from domain registration is essential for the sustenance of our mandate. ?The general growth of the Internet, especially social media, businesses coming online, e-commerce and games have been important forces. ?Among all of the factors, search marketing and online advertising growth are probably the two most significant drivers.

The general economy also plays a role. ?In fact, it has been shown by industry studies that the domain market leads the stock market slightly in its upward trends. ?Some theorise the acquisition of domain names for new products and new initiatives foretelling the upward swing for the market. ?The integration of the marketplace, such as the free trade agreements entered into by the ASEAN countries

Small and medium sized businesses who are leveraging the Internet to expand their business regionally are especially drawn to .asia. ?We are seeing many SMEs utilize their own ccTLD (e.g. .jp in Japan or .in in India) for their local market, and adopt .asia when they expand out (e.g. a Japanese company expanding to China, or an Indian company expanding to Singapore).

YS: What are the community projects that the DotAsia Organization is currently running?
EC: DotAsia supports a range of community projects that promote Internet development and adoption for social and economical growth in the region. ?We support 2 grants fund: Digital Solidarity Fund which supports digital inclusion projects, and Information Society Innovations Fund ?which funds technical research and development projects that bring social impact. ?We also support the One-Laptop-Per-Child initiative to send laptops to children in rural villages around Asia.

Our two flagship community projects include: 1. NetMission.Asia , which is a youth volunteer program with a focus on digital inclusion and governance projects. ?NetMission Ambassador alumni had implemented projects that have become a core lineup of DotAsia?s programs: YIGF Camp an annual multistakeholder role playing training camp for students; and NetY a program targeting secondary school students and in partnership with YMCA; and 2. Go.Asia, which is an online platform promoting volunteerism with a belief that every small act counts. ?The program is also home to Relief.Asia which is a disaster relief and rebuild resource initiative, Jamie Oliver?s Food Revolution Day and the Mandela Day initiatives in Asia.

YS: Is it difficult to hire people for a hard core business that works for a community cause? What is DotAsia?s hiring policy?
EC: Thats the first time I?ve ever been asked that! But it is a challenge for us and the right combination for us is someone who knows the community impact of DotAsia and at the same time they must be business savvy, as that is what will sustain us. We?re looking for people who look at this marriage as an opportunity and a challenge rather than a conflict. and our 15 member team is exactly that.

As a part of our hiring policy, all our employees have to spend some time volunteering for us before they can come on board full time.

YS: What is DotAsia?s presence in India so far? How has that experience been like?
EC: We work closely with our registrar partners around the world wherever we promote the .asia domain. ?DotAsia currently has over 150 accredited registrars worldwide. ?In India, we work with 8 accredited registrars, who in turn connects to thousands of resellers and domain storefronts. From what we have seen, SMEs are the biggest buyers of .asia domains from India. These are essentially SMEs looking to get a foothold in Asia.

Previously during the Cricket World Cup, we implemented a special promotion giving away an iPad for the reseller who obtained the biggest percentage increase in new .asia registrations in the month, while registrants were entered into a luck draw for an iPhone. ?Understanding the price sensitivity of the India market, we also implemented different point-of-sale discounts to stimulate adoption and awareness for the .asia domain.

Looking to the future, we are working closely with registrars to implement more exciting pricing and value promotions for .Asia domains. ?In addition we are on the lookout for more domain related events in the region to be part of in the coming year.

YS: What are some of your plans for expansion in the coming years and more specifically what are your plans for India?
EC: India will be an important market for us. ?With the tremendous potential in search engine marketing and search engine optimization growth, we believe that domain names will see a significant uptake in India and across Asia. ?Domain name as an SEO tool is still a relatively new concept for the Asia market, but it has been fueling the continued growth in the US and European markets for the last decade. ?We believe this trend is now arriving into Asia. ?Another key development is the recognition of domain names as a brand and as an address for facilitating customers to find your business online.

Besides India, we see a strong latent demand for Asians abroad, e.g. in the US. ?The Asian American market is tech savvy, affluent and proud of their Asian heritage. ?Both marketers targeting the Asian American segment as well as Asian Americans themselves can find value in the .asia domain.

Third storm in less than week drenches Northern Calif.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Residents of Northern California endured the brunt of another powerful storm that drenched the area with yet another round of pounding rain and strong winds, but damage from the storm was less than expected, officials said.

The latest storm system ? the third to hit the area in less than a week ? moved across the region late Saturday and early Sunday dropping as much as an inch of rain per hour in some areas, toppling trees and knocking out electrical service to tens of thousands of people, officials said.

Rivers across Northern California swelled from the deluge, but did not flood as extensively as had been expected, officials said.

Forecasters had issued flood warnings for the Napa and Russian rivers, two rivers north of San Francisco with a history of flooding, as well as the Truckee River, near Lake Tahoe, but by Sunday afternoon had canceled the warning for the Russian River.

"It (the storm) moved through a lit bit faster than it was looking like it would, so it didn't plant on top of us and keeping raining," said Austin Cross, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. "The period of heavy rain didn't last as long."

In Napa, where officials had handed out more than 8,000 sandbags and about 150 tons of sand before the storm hit, officials breathed a sigh of relief Sunday afternoon after the heaviest rain moved out of the area and the city appeared to avoid any major damage from the storm.

"We've had some minor street flooding and some of the intersections were flooded," Napa city spokesman Barry Martin said.

Flood construction projects were credited with keeping the river within its banks through the city, while most of anticipated flooding, expected around 6 p.m. Sunday, was expected to hit a mostly agricultural area outside of the city, officials said.

In Truckee, 30 miles west of Reno, city officials were focusing on snow removal Sunday afternoon instead of flood control after the town received 4 to 5 inches of snow in the morning, said Assistant City Manager Alex Terrazas.

"We continue to keep an eye on the river, but things are certainly better than they could have been," he said. "We'll transition back to flood management if we need to."

Besides the speed in which the system moved through the area, weather officials were heartened by colder temperatures than expected in the mountains, meaning more snow and less rain fell.

In far Northern California, flood warnings remained in effect Sunday for the Eel, Navarro and Mad rivers.

Meanwhile, as Pacific Gas & Electric crews worked on restoring power, about 57,000 people from Santa Cruz to Eureka, including about 13,000 people in the San Francisco Bay area, remained without electricity Sunday afternoon as the powerful winds from the storm knocked down trees and sent broken tree limbs and branches across power lines, officials said.

"It really did broadside California," PG&E spokesman Joe Molica said of the storm.

About 2,000 PG&E crews were working Sunday to try to restore power, Molica said.

Wind gusts, recorded as high as 60 miles per hour in parts of the Bay area, were blamed for knocking over a big rig truck as it drove over the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge at around 5 a.m. Sunday.

Tow crews had to wait for the winds to subside later in the morning before they could remove the truck, officials said.

Also, train service on the Bay Area Rapid Transit system was disrupted for about an hour Sunday morning because of an electrical outage blamed on the weather.

Iran pushes out Afghans as regional power-play heats up

HERAT, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Ghaus worked in Iran for five years but has nothing to show for it. All he has are memories of being jailed, beaten and sent home to Afghanistan.

Afghanistan's oil-rich western neighbor has for years been a destination for Afghans seeking work or fleeing war. Afghanistan and Iran share a language, and cultural and historical links.

But hostility to the U.S. role in Afghanistan, regional ambitions and an economy choked by Western sanctions have persuaded Iran to cast out Afghan migrants, to the dismay of those forced home and their government.

In May, Iran threatened to expel Afghan refugees and migrant workers, in all about 2.4 million people, if Afghanistan signed a strategic security pact with the United States. The deal was struck.

"Afghan refugees and migrants are becoming the victims of big political games played between the Iranian and U.S. powers," said Abdul Samad Hami, Afghanistan's deputy minister for refugees.

Few of the migrants, who pay smugglers about $700 to get across the 1,000 km (620 miles) border into Iran, know they have been caught up in a geopolitical power play.

Barefoot and wearing a sun-bleached silver turban, Ghaus was huddled with about 20 other expelled migrants at a U.N. center in the western Afghan city of Herat after being dumped out of a bus on the border.

"Suddenly, my life came to an end," the soft-spoken bricklayer told Reuters.

Ghaus is one of 191,121 unregistered Afghan migrants forced out of Iran from January to September 30 this year, according to the U.N. refugee agency, up 29 percent from last year.

About 1.4 million migrant workers remain in Iran but hundreds of them are being expelled every day. There are also nearly a million Afghan refugees who are allowed to live there.

Shuffling home through Herat's Islam Qala border checkpoint, most of the returning migrants are young men dressed like Iranians in jeans and brightly colored bomber jackets, but with bulging suitcases and bed-rolls on their heads.

Many migrants have called Iran home for decades, part of an exodus of nine million Afghans - a third of the population - who fled to neighbors Iran and Pakistan, beginning with the Soviet invasion in 1979, through to the austere Taliban rule of the 1990s.

The expulsions represent not just a burden for Afghanistan but also a loss of income, and could even spell more instability ahead of the withdrawal of most foreign troops by the end of 2014.

Afghan migrants in Iran send home about $500 million a year, a considerable sum for one of the world's poorest countries. The funds will become more important as foreign aid shrinks with the departure of Western forces.

INFLUENCE, OPIUM

Iran says migrant workers pose a security threat. But Afghan politicians and analysts say Iran is pushing them out to show it can ratchet up the pressure when it doesn't get its way.

As the United States reduces its role in Afghanistan, neighbors are competing for influence. Iran already backs a third of Afghan media and builds schools and clinics to boost its sway, according to Afghan officials.

Iran's economic influence in Afghanistan is palpable in Herat, which enjoys robust trade over the nearby border and boasts smoothly paved roads and bustling markets.

Iran offers Afghan migrants menial work, often on construction sites. Many of the men return home addicted to opium after being paid in the drug instead of cash.

This is not only because it is cheaper for employers to pay in opium, but also because the depreciation of Iran's rial, in the face of international sanctions over its nuclear program, has made opium more attractive than cash for the workers.

"We were allowed to choose - money or drugs. Over time, drugs seemed the better option," said Rasool, a grey-bearded man who guarded a construction site in Iran's second-largest city of Mashhad for 15 years.

Like Ghaus, Rasool was briefly imprisoned in Iran before being expelled.

Some migrants end up in prison after getting home.

"We've noticed an increase in the number of migrants coming back here with drug addictions," said General Shah Mir, who oversees Herat's provincial prison, where almost 300 former migrant workers are doing time for opium trafficking.

Health officials estimate there are 1 million Afghans addicted to opium or heroin, or about 8 percent of the adult population, making it the world's top user per capita. It is also the top producer of opium and its refined form, heroin.

"TOUGH TALK"

But it is not just the migrant workers that Iran wants out.

It is also making moves to force out the majority of the 930,000 legal Afghan refugees and is stepping up a campaign to make them feel unwelcome, Afghan officials and rights group say.

Last month, Iran's Interior Ministry said a decision had been made to "end the status of asylum for 700,000 Afghans" by March 21, 2015.

An Interior Ministry spokesman declined to comment on the reason for the decision.

Faraz Sanei, Iran researcher at the New York-based Human Rights Watch, said Iran gets tough on repatriating Afghans when it feels pressured in the regional maneuvering for influence.

"When political tension between Tehran and Kabul is high, for example, with regard to the U.S. role in Afghanistan, Tehran has stepped up its tough talk," Sanei said.

Iran and Afghanistan, along with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, agreed on a voluntary repatriation program in 2002 in the belief that with better security at home, the refugees should choose to go back.

"Though this has been the official government line, we have seen an increase in the restrictive measures against Afghan refugees in recent years that has made life in Iran increasingly difficult," said Sanei.

Iran has been increasing the number of "no-go areas" for Afghans, which authorities say is part of a strategy to secure its borders. Afghans are now allowed in 12 of Iran's 31 provinces, down from 14 last year.

"Even within the allowed areas, movement of Afghans is restricted and there are only certain jobs they can do," said Hami, the deputy minister for refugees.

Afghans have even been banned from certain public parks, Iranian media has reported.

Hami said Afghanistan had been preparing for the expulsion of refugees for some time and was mapping out a "contingency plan" with the U.N. refugee agency that should be ready by January.

For Herat member of parliament Qazi Nazir Ahmad Hanfai, the reason Iran is putting pressure on Afghans living there is clear: Iran is punishing Afghanistan for defying its call to reject the U.S. security pact.

"The Iranians warned the Afghans ... and now we're seeing the result of that threat," Hanfai said.

HP Pavilion P7-1235

Although much of the spotlight has lately been focused on ultrabooks and all-in-one systems, desktops have steadfastly continued to remain a viable option, especially for users on a budget. This rings especially true in the case of the HP Pavilion P7-1235 ($539.99 list), an affordably priced general desktop PC whose perks?like USB 3.0 connectivity and a spacious 1TB hard drive?help elevate it above a standard bare-bones budget system. That said, its so-so AMD A8-550 CPU and lack of an included monitor serve as a reminder that, ultimately, better options exist.

Design and Features
The P7-1235 comes in a relatively unassuming black matte-finished chassis that measures 15 by 7 by 17 inches (HWD). Like the Acer Aspire AM3970G-UW10P and the Asus Essentio CM6870, a glossy black plastic face complements its metallic body, providing a mild aesthetic flourish while also serving the practical purpose of housing an optical drive (a SuperMulti DVD burner, in this case) and an array of card readers (xD/Smart Media/Compact Flash/SD/MMC/Memory Stick); the lower portion of this plastic panel slides down to reveal headphone and microphone jacks as well as a pair of USB 3.0 ports. Aside from a silver trim lining the edges of the plastic face, the P7-1235 more or less resembles a traditional, old-school desktop that could fit in 2002 just as easily as it does in 2012.

Unlike the Acer AM3470-UC30P or Acer AM3970G-UW10P, the P7-1235 does not come bundled with a monitor, which is understandable at this price point but nonetheless belies the notion of affordability since it forces users to shell out extra cash to obtain one. It does, however, come with a wired mouse and keyboard, and there are plenty of available USB ports to plug them into. In addition to the ports found on the front of the system, the rear houses two additional USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, VGA and DVI ports, an Ethernet port, and several audio outputs to accommodate front and side speakers as well as a subwoofer. There isn't an HDMI output, though, so users looking the port would be better served with the Gateway DX4870-UR11P or add a graphics card with HDMI capabilities sometime later.

Beneath the hood, the P7-1235 offers some potential for expandability. There's an available internal 3.5-inch bay for a second hard drive as well as an empty 5.25-inch bay for adding an internal optical drive like, say, a Blu-ray player. Meanwhile, the Pavilion P7-1235's 8GB of SDRAM occupies all four of the motherboard's DIMM sockets, so anyone looking to upgrade to the maximum 32GB RAM will have to discard some of the included memory in order to do so. The 8GB should be enough for most home users, even the ones who edit their snapshots. The motherboard also features one free PCIe x16 slot as well as three available PCIe x1 slots, though users looking to upgrade the P7-1235 with a beefier GPU should heed this critical caveat: the system's 300W power supply limits the options to midrange graphics cards, which don't consume as much power as their high-end counterparts.

The P7-1235's 1TB hard drive comes loaded with software. While this isn't much of a surprise for a system in this price range, it still means that users must initially contend with the usual bevy of bloatware (unnecessary toolbars, games of questionable value) trialware (30-day trials of Norton Internet Security, Norton Online Backup), as well as the occasional useful program (Office Starter 2010). The Pavilion P7-1235 also comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Performance
HP Pavilion P7-1235 The P7-1235 is equipped with a 3.2GHz AMD A8-5500 CPU, which is one of AMD's second-generation A-series (otherwise known as "Trinity" in tech circles) accelerated processing units (APUs), which combines the Pavilion P7-1235's CPU and its integrated AMD Radeon HD 7560D GPU onto a single chipset. As compared to another APU-equipped system in its class?namely the Acer AM3470-UC30P?the P7-1235 fared well in our benchmark tests. However, when stacked against systems equipped with second- and third-generation Intel Core-equipped systems, the P7-1235 struggled to maintain equal footing. This much is evident in its PCMark 7 score of 2,548 points, which easily breezed past the Acer AM3470-UC30P (2,081 points) but fell short of the rest of the pack, including the Acer M3970G-UW10P (2,611 points) and, to a greater extent, the Gateway DX4870-UR11P (3,540 points). Its multimedia performance similarly fell flat compared to others.

The P7-1235 completed our Handbrake video-encoding test in 1 minute 59 seconds, which outpaced the Aspire AM3470-UC30P (2:33) but came nowhere near the Gateway DX4870-UR11P (1:05) or the Asus Essentio CM6870 (1:03). The Pavilion P7-1235's Cinebench R11.5 score of 2.76 points, meanwhile, came within striking distance of the Acer AM3470-UC30P (2.93 points) but withered in the face of its competition, like the Acer M3970G-UW10P (4.91 points) and the Essentio CM6870 (7.50 points). The 5 minutes 5 seconds it took the P7-1235 to complete our Photoshop CS5 test was slightly faster than the Acer AM3470-UC30P (5:55) but, once again, was outgunned by comparable Intel Core-equipped systems such as the Acer M3970G-UW10P (3:28) and the Gateway DX4870-UR11P (2:50).

HP Pavilion P7-1235 The P7-1235's integrated AMD Radeon HD 7560D GPU, on the other hand, allowed it to cross the 30 frames per second (fps) playability threshold in medium-detail settings. Accordingly, it churned out 49fps in medium-quality settings in our Crysis benchmark test, which trumped most of its class, save for the Asus CM6870. In very high quality-settings, its performance of 7fps landed between the Aspire AM3460-UC30P (5fps) and the Asus CM6870 (11fps). The P7-1235's 3DMark 11 scores surpassed the rest of the litter (1,732 points in Entry-level mode; 338 points in Extreme mode), including the Acer AM3470-UC30P (1,567 and 283 points, respectively), and only fell short of the class-leading Asus CM6870 (2,832 and 532 points, respectively).

For users on a budget, the HP Pavilion P7-1235 is a decent system that doesn't entirely skimp out on niceties like USB 3.0 ports, light to moderate 3D prowess, or hard drive capacity. However, better options exist, especially for users who don't already own a monitor. For only $60 more, the Editors' Choice-winning Acer AM3470-UC30P sports a similar processor and comes with a generous 23-inch monitor. Users who already have a monitor, meanwhile, would be better served by a system that sports more robust Intel Core processing power, like the Gateway DX4870-UR11P.
