Real Wedding Round-up ~ 2011 Weddings on Pocketful of Dreams

? December 30, 2011Posted in: Inspiration, Love Stories, Real Weddings

Hello lovelies,

And how are you doing on this rather wet and windy Friday? No doubt looking forward to more festivities tomorrow night. So what is everyone up to?

I am having a mini New Years Eve Eve party tonight. We decided (The we being my Mum, step-sister, cousin and two girlfriends) that New Years Eve is so difficult for many reasons: getting everyone together in the same place, the extortionate and inflated prices of everything from food to taxis and the high expectations / low enjoyment levels that are generally experienced on this night. So instead of battling against it all we came up with the genius idea of getting together for a girlie night the evening prior, it is a Friday after all, and I cannot wait for our evening to begin. We?re heading to a wonderful Italian restaurant, a new discovery with such friendly staff and a rather brilliant party atmosphere, followed by drinks at a local wine bar. It will be an absolute scream with so much laughter that I just know my sides will be hurting the next day, I am of course still celebrating NYE, I?ll be doing so at two house parties.

Whatever you do I hope you have fun.

US warns Iran against closing key oil passage

(AP) ? The U.S. strongly warned Iran on Wednesday against closing a vital Persian Gulf waterway that carries one-sixth of the world's oil supply, after Iran threatened to choke off traffic through the Strait of Hormuz if Washington imposes sanctions targeting the country's crude exports.

The increasingly heated exchange raises new tensions in a standoff that has the potential to spark military reprisals and spike oil prices to levels that could batter an already fragile global economy.

Iran's navy chief said Wednesday that it would be "very easy" for his country's forces to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the passage at the mouth of the Persian Gulf through which about 15 million barrels of oil pass daily. It was the second such warning by Iran in two days, reflecting Tehran's concern that the West is about to impose new sanctions that could hit the country's biggest source of revenue, oil.

"Iran has comprehensive control over the strategic waterway," Adm. Habibollah Sayyari told state-run Press TV, as the country was in the midst of a 10-day military drill near the strategic waterway.

The comments drew a quick response from the U.S.

"This is not just an important issue for security and stability in the region, but is an economic lifeline for countries in the Gulf, to include Iran," Pentagon press secretary George Little said. "Interference with the transit or passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz will not be tolerated."

Separately, Bahrain-based U.S. Navy 5th Fleet spokeswoman Lt. Rebecca Rebarich said the Navy is "always ready to counter malevolent actions to ensure freedom of navigation."

Rebarich declined to say whether the U.S. force had adjusted its presence or readiness in the Gulf in response to Iran's comments, but said the Navy "maintains a robust presence in the region to deter or counter destabilizing activities, while safeguarding the region's vital links to the international community."

Iran's threat to seal off the Gulf, surrounded by oil-rich Gulf states, reflect its concerns over the prospect that the Obama administration will impose sanctions over its nuclear program that would severely hit its biggest revenue source. Iran is the world's fourth-largest oil producer, pumping about 4 million barrels a day.

Gulf Arab nations appeared ready to at least ease market tensions. A senior Saudi Arabian oil official told The Associated Press that Gulf Arab nations are ready to step in to offset any potential loss of exports from Iran. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment on the issue.

Saudi Arabia, which has been producing about 10 million barrels per day, has an overall production capacity of over 12 million barrels per day and is widely seen as the only OPEC member with sufficient spare capacity to offset major shortages.

What remains unclear is what routes the Gulf nations could take to move the oil to markets if Iran goes through with its threat.

About 15 million barrels per day pass through the Hormuz Strait, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

There are some pipelines that could be tapped, but Gulf oil leaders, who met in Cairo on Dec. 24, declined to say whether they had discussed alternate routes or what they may be.

The Saudi official's comment, however, appeared to allay some concerns. The U.S. benchmark crude futures contract fell $1.98 by the close of trading Wednesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, but still hovered just below $100 per barrel.

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner played down the Iranian threats as "rhetoric," saying, "we've seen these kinds of comments before."

While the Obama administration has warned Iran that it would not tolerate attempts to disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. officials do not see any indication that the situation will come to that. Nor do they believe that Iran, which is already under increasing pressure from sanctions, would risk disrupting the Strait because doing so would further damage Iran's own economy.

Instead, the administration believes Iran is playing the only card it has left: issuing threats and attempting to shift focus away from its own behavior.

U.S. officials have not said whether there is a concrete response plan in place should Iran seek to block the Strait. But the administration has long said it is comfortable with the U.S. Naval presence in the region, indicating that the U.S. could respond rapidly if needed.

The White House has been largely silent on Iran's threat, underscoring the administration's belief that responding at the White House level would only encourage Iran.

While many analysts believe that Iran's warnings are little more than posturing, they still highlight both the delicate nature of the oil market, which moves as much on rhetoric as supply and demand fundamentals.

Iran relies on crude sales for about 80 percent of its public revenues, and sanctions or even a pre-emptive measure by Tehran to withhold its crude from the market would already batter its flailing economy.

IHS Global Insight analyst Richard Cochrane said in a report Wednesday that markets are "jittery over the possibility" of Iran's blockading the strait. But "such action would also damage Iran's economy, and risk retaliation from the U.S. and allies that could further escalate instability in the region."

"Accordingly, it is not likely to be a decision that the Iranian leadership will take lightly," he said.

Earlier sanctions targeting the oil and financial sector added new pressures to the country's already struggling economy. Government cuts in subsidies on key goods like food and energy have angered Iranians, stoking inflation while the country's currency steadily depreciates.

The impetus behind the subsidies cut plan, pushed through parliament by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was to reduce budget costs and would pass money directly to the poor. But critics have pointed to it as another in a series of bad policy moves by the hardline president.

So far, Western nations have been unable to agree on sanctions targeting oil exports, even as they argue that Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon. Tehran maintains its nuclear program ? already the subject of several rounds of sanctions ? is purely peaceful.

The U.S. Congress has passed a bill that penalizes foreign firms that do business with the Iran Central Bank, a move that would heavily hurt Iran's ability to export crude. European and Asian nations use the bank for transactions to import Iranian oil.

President Barack Obama has said he will sign the bill despite his misgivings. China and Russia have opposed such measures.

Sanctions specifically targeting Iran's oil exports would likely temporarily spike oil prices to levels that could weigh heavily on the world economy.

Closing the Strait of Hormuz would hit even harder. Energy consultant and trader The Schork Group estimated crude would jump to above $140 per barrel. Conservatives in Iran claim global oil prices will jump to $250 a barrel should the waterway be closed.

By closing the strait, Iran may aim to send the message that its pain from sanctions will also be felt by others. But it has equally compelling reasons not to try.

The move would put the country's hardline regime straight in the cross-hairs of the world, including nations that have so far been relative allies. Much of Iran's crude goes to Europe and to Asia.

"Shutting down the strait ... is the last bullet that Iran has and therefore we have to express some doubt that they would do this and at the same time lose their support from China and Russia," said analyst Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix in Switzerland.

Iran has adopted an aggressive military posture in recent months in response to increasing threats from the U.S. and Israel of possible military action to stop Iran's nuclear program.

The Iranian navy's exercises, which began on Saturday, involve submarines, missile drills, torpedoes and drones. A senior Iranian commander said Wednesday that the country's navy is also planning to test advanced missiles and "smart" torpedoes during the maneuvers.

The war games cover a 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) stretch off the Strait of Hormuz, northern parts of the Indian Ocean and into the Gulf of Aden near the entrance to the Red Sea and could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels in the area.

The moderate news website, irdiplomacy.ir, says the show of strength is intended to send a message to the West that Iran is capable of sealing off the waterway.

"The war games ... are a warning to the West that should oil and central bank sanctions be stepped up, (Iran) is able to cut the lifeblood of the West and Arabs," it said, adding that the West "should regard the maneuvers as a direct message."

Mayor Gimenez vetoes new Tallahassee lobbying contracts

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, exercising his veto muscle for the first time, blocked a county commission move that would have increased spending on Tallahassee lobbyists ? the polar opposite of what the commission purportedly set out to do.

?My concern is they started out to save money and ended up costing the county more,?? Gimenez said in an interview. ?I vetoed it because I didn?t think it was the right thing to do, so they can go back and try again.??

At the Dec. 19 meeting, the commission voted to pay $450,000 to four lobbying firms for government representation and consulting services at the state level. That was $50,000 more than the two incumbent firms had offered to take to keep the work.

That commission vote of 10-3 came after 90 minutes of debate and five failed motions. Commission chairman Joe Martinez ? who had spearheaded the effort to search for new lobbying firms with the goal of reducing spending ? ended up voting against the measure. Also voting against it were Commissioners Xavier Suarez and Lynda Bell.

?I?m so thrilled. It put a smile on my face,?? Bell said Wednesday after receiving the mayor?s veto message. ?We don?t need to spend that kind of money on lobbying.??

Gimenez, who resigned as a county commissioner in April to run for the mayoral-seat vacancy created by the recall of Carlos Alvarez, has worked to build a cooperative relationship with the commission and has played an active role at meetings. And the veto isn?t likely to disrupt those ties.

Commissioner Sally Heyman, who said she reluctantly supported the lobbying contracts in order to be on the board?s prevailing side, said she was pleased with Gimenez?s action. ?This is the mayor?s first veto, and it was an appropriate one. While the [commission?s] intention was to save costs as it ended up, it didn?t ? so applause to the mayor.?

The commission?s money-saving effort began in October, shortly after the county?s new austere budget kicked in and the prospect of employee layoffs and labor concessions began to hit home. Martinez said in an Oct. 7 letter to the mayor that to ?drastically reduce? costs it would be necessary to advertise for lobbying firms to be selected through a competitive process.

The threat of losing the county work spurred the incumbent firms ? Ron L. Book P.A. and Rutledge, Ecenia & Purnell ? to offer to cut their fees to $200,000 a year each, down from $225,000. The proposed cuts were in addition to reductions in 2009 and 2010.

But the commission brushed aside that offer and pushed forward with the search, directing the administration to bring the panel all qualified firms for it to choose. That resulted in four suitors: The two incumbents plus Akerman Senterfitt & Eidson and Ballard Partners Inc. Book subcontracts with the Pittman Law Group. Rutledge subcontracts with Becker & Poliakoff; Dutko Worldwide LLC; and Gomez Barker Associates Inc.

Instead of picking among the four firms, the commission voted to include all four on the county?s Tallahassee team. Book and Rutledge would each have gotten $170,000 a year under the new contracts, while newcomers Akerman and Ballard would each have gotten $55,000 a year.

?What happened was everybody wanted to have all the parties included in the contract, and you cannot do that if you are trying to reduce costs. You can?t have it both ways,? Commissioner Jean Monestime said. ?Having four firms may be better, but since the idea was to reduce the costs, I?m OK with reconsidering it.?

The veto means the issue will come up at the Jan. 24 commission meeting, although the board could agree to bring it up at its Jan.?5 session. A two-thirds vote would be needed to override the mayor?s veto.

For now, the county will continue on a month-to-month basis with the incumbents, Book and Rutledge, at the old rate of $450,000 a year. But Gimenez says he?ll push for less. ?I?ll try to renegotiate that right away.?

Python captured at South Florida home

PALMETTO BAY, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida family had shocking surprise swimming in their pool, Sunday.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Venom Unit captured a 13-foot Burmese python in the backyard pool of a house near Southwest 97th Avenue and 183rd Street.

The snake shocked the homeowner, who immediately called for help. "I saw a 12 foot python curled up in the corner of the pool and I called 911," said Suladie Miranda, through translation.

A production company recorded video of the daring capture. A member of the unit grabbed the snake by its neck and pulled it out of the pool. However, the snake slithered back into the water. The crew member said, "That is a very large Burmese python."

During the second attempt, the crew member takes the snake about three-quarters of the way out of the water, but the video shows the reptile once again gets back into the pool and starts to swim. "It was swimming around the whole pool," one girl said.

Several additional rescue crew members worked together to pull the python out of the family's pool. They placed the snake in a large cage and took it to a farm in Homestead.

No injuries were reported.

U.S. adds surveillance drone on Mexico border (Reuters)

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz, Dec 27 ? U.S. authorities took possession of an additional high-tech surveillance drone on Tuesday to overfly the rugged Arizona borderlands to look for drug smugglers and illegal immigrants crossing from Mexico.

The Predator-B drone is based at the National Air Security Operations Center in Sierra Vista, a few miles north of the Mexico border in southeast Arizona, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said.

The addition brings CBP's fleet of surveillance drones along the nearly 2,000-mile southwest border with Mexico to six. Four are based at the Arizona center, and two more overfly the border from Corpus Christi, Texas.

"The missions from these two centers will allow CBP to deploy its unmanned aircraft from the eastern tip of California across the common Mexican land borders of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas," CBP said in a statement.

The unmanned aircraft are equipped with tools including powerful day and night vision cameras which enable operators to spot incursions by drug traffickers and illegal immigrants slipping over the border from Mexico.

The surveillance operations under the program have led to the seizure of around 46,600 pounds of illicit drugs and 7,500 arrests along the southwest border.

This past year, arrests of illegal immigrants crossing north over the southwest border dropped to 327,577, their lowest level since 1972 when President Richard Nixon was in the White House.

Factors in the stark decline have included tightened border and workplace enforcement, a slowed U.S. economy providing fewer jobs to undocumented workers, and increased drug cartel-related violence in Mexico making the journey north more hazardous, according to analysts.

The arrival of the Predator-B marks the second of two unmanned aircraft earmarked in supplemental budget provisions identified in August 2010.

Washington Capitals (17-14-2) at Buffalo Sabres (16-15-3), 7 p.m. (ET)

December has not been a good month for the Buffalo Sabres. Tonight, Lindy Ruff's club will try to avoid their first four-game losing streak of the season when it hosts the Washington Capitals at First Niagara Center.

Buffalo was dealt its third straight loss Thursday in Toronto, dropping the Sabres to 3-5-2 this month. The Sabres, who are 12 points behind Boston for first place in the Northeast Division, are just 6-10-3 over their last 19 trips to the ice.

The Sabres were outscored by a combined 15-6 margin during a recent 0-3 road trip. The most recent setback came in a 3-2 setback to the Maple Leafs, who received 40 saves from goaltender James Reimer.

Jason Pominville had a goal and an assist while Derek Roy scored the other goal for the Sabres, who have lost five of their last six. Ryan Miller turned aside 28 shots in the loss.

"We're trying to keep the belief that effort equals opportunity, and opportunity is what you need in this league," said Miller. "We have to keep giving ourselves a chance."

Sabres forwards Thomas Vanek is questionable for tonight's game after leaving Thursday's game with an undisclosed injury. Vanek is leading the Sabres with 17 goals and his 36 points leave the Austrian sniper one point behind Pominville for the team lead.

Buffalo is 8-9-3 as the host this season and will play its next two games on the road in New Jersey and Washington.

The Capitals also lost their last game before Christmas break, as they were dealt a shootout loss by Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils. Brodeur stopped two skaters in the shootout, including a nifty glove save on Alex Ovechkin, to lift the Devils to a 4-3 win in Newark.

Washington erased a 3-0 deficit in the third period to get the game to overtime. Jason Chimera had the last two goals for Washington, including the equalizer with 1:42 remaining. Brooks Laich also scored while Michal Neuvirth had 25 saves for the Capitals, who have dropped three of five.

"We threw everything at 'em and the guys played hard to tie the game up," said Capitals head coach Dale Hunter. "We just went. We had nothing to lose."

Washington is just 6-9-1 as the guest this year and has dropped two straight on the road.

The Sabres slammed the Caps by a 5-1 score when the teams met in Buffalo on Nov. 26. That victory ended a three-game winning streak in the series for Washington, which has lost two of its last three in western New York.

New Air Jordans cause nationwide shopping frenzy (AP)

SEATTLE ? Fights, vandalism and arrests marked the release of Nike's new Air Jordan basketball shoes as a shopping rush on stores across the country led to unrest that nearly turned into rioting.

The outbursts of chaos stretched from Washington state to Georgia as shoppers ? often waiting for hours in lines ? converged on stores Friday in pursuit of the shoes, a retro model of one of the most popular Air Jordans ever made.

In suburban Seattle, police used pepper spray on about 20 customers who started fighting at the Westfield Southcenter mall. The crowd started gathering at four stores in the mall around midnight and had grown to more than 1,000 people by 4 a.m., when the stores opened, Tukwila Officer Mike Murphy said. He said it started as fighting and pushing among people in line and escalated over the next hour.

Murphy said no injuries were reported, although some people suffered cuts or scrapes from fights. Shoppers also broke two doors, and 18-year-old man was arrested for assault after authorities say he punched an officer.

"He did not get his shoes; he went to jail," Murphy said.

The mayhem was reminiscent of the violence that broke out 20 years ago in many cities as the shoes became popular targets for thieves. It also had a decidedly Black Friday feel as huge crowds of shoppers overwhelmed stores for a must-have item.

In some areas, lines began forming several hours before businesses opened for the $180 shoes that were selling in a limited release.

As the crowds kept growing through the night, they became more unruly and ended in vandalism, violence and arrests.

A man was stabbed when a brawl broke out between several people waiting in line at a Jersey City, N.J., mall to buy the new shoes, authorities said. The 20-year-old man was expected to recover from his injuries.

In Richmond, Calif., police say crowds waiting to buy the Air Jordan 11 Retro Concords at the Hilltop Mall were turned away after a gunshot rang out around 7 a.m.

No injuries were reported, but police said a 24-year-old suspect was taken into custody. The gun apparently went off inadvertently, the Contra Costa Times reported.

Seventeen-year-old Dylan Pulver in Great Neck, N.Y., said he's been looking forward to the release of the shoes for several years, and he set out at 4:30 a.m. to get a pair. After the first store he tried was too crowded, he moved on to a second location and scored a pair.

"I probably could have used a half a size smaller, but I was just really happy to have the shoe," he said.

The frenzy over Air Jordans has been dangerous in the past. Some people were mugged or even killed for early versions of the shoe, created by Nike Inc. in 1984.

The Air Jordan has since been a consistent hit with sneaker fans, spawning a subculture of collectors willing to wait hours to buy the latest pair. Some collectors save the shoes for special occasions or never take them out of the box.

A new edition was launched each year, and release dates had to be moved to the weekends at some points to keep kids from skipping school to get a pair.

But the uproar over the shoe had died down in recent years. These latest incidents seem to be part of trend of increasing acts of violence at retailers this holiday shopping season, such as the shopper who pepper-sprayed others at a Wal-Mart in Los Angeles on Black Friday and crowds looting a clothing store in New York.

Nike issued a statement in response to the violence that said: "Consumer safety and security is of paramount importance. We encourage anyone wishing to purchase our product to do so in a respectful and safe manner."

The retro version of the Air Jordan 11 was a highly sought-after shoe because of the design and the fact that the original was released in 1996 when Jordan and the Bulls were at the height of their dominance.

Pulver said they were a "defining shoe in Jordan's career."

Other disturbances reported at stores in places like Kentucky and Nebraska ranged from shoving and threats to property damage.

In Taylor, Mich., about 100 people forced their way into a shopping center around 5:30 a.m., damaging decorations and overturning benches. Police say a 21-year-old man was arrested.

In Toledo, Ohio, police said they arrested three people after a crowd surged into a mall.

In Lithonia, Ga., at least four people were apparently arrested after customers broke down a door at a store selling the shoes. DeKalb County police said up to 20 squad cars responded.

In Northern California, two men were arrested at a Fairfield mall after crowds shoved each other to get in position for the Nikes, police said.

In Stockton, Detective Joe Silva said a person was taken into custody at Weberstown Mall on suspicion of making criminal threats involving the shoes. Police also were investigating an attempted robbery in the mall's parking lot. The victim was wrongly believed to have just purchased Air Jordans.

In Tukwila, Officer Murphy said the crowd was on the verge of a riot and would have gotten even more out of hand if the police hadn't intervened.

About 25 officers from Tukwila and surrounding areas responded. Murphy said police smelled marijuana and found alcohol containers at the scene.

"It was not a nice, orderly group of shoppers," Murphy said. "There were a lot of hostile and disorderly people."

The Southcenter mall's stores sold out of the Air Jordans, and all but about 50 people got a pair, Murphy said.

Shoppers described the scene as chaotic and at times dangerous.

Carlisa Williams said she joined the crowd at the Southcenter for the experience and ended up buying two pairs of shoes, one for her and one for her brother. But she said she'll never do anything like it again.

"I don't understand why they're so important to people," Williams told KING-TV. "They're just shoes at the end of the day. It's not worth risking your life over."

Mom: School put my autistic son in a bag

A 9-year-old autistic boy who misbehaved at school was stuffed into a duffel bag and the drawstring pulled tight, according to his mother, who said she found him wiggling inside as a teacher's aide stood by.

The mother of fourth-grader Christopher Baker said her son called out to her when she walked up to him in the bag Dec. 14. The case has spurred an online petition calling for the firing of school employees responsible.

"He was treated like trash and thrown in the hallway," Chris' mother, Sandra Baker, said Thursday. She did not know how exactly how long he had been in the bag, but probably not more than 20 minutes.

Mercer County schools Interim Superintendent Dennis Davis said confidentiality laws forbid him from commenting.

"The employees of the Mercer County Public Schools are qualified professionals who treat students with respect and dignity while providing a safe and nurturing learning environment," Davis said in a statement.

State education officials said they were investigating.

Story: Autism 5 times more common among low birth weight babies

Chris is a student at Mercer County Intermediate School in Harrodsburg in central Kentucky. The day had barely begun when his family was called to the school because Chris was acting up. He is enrolled in a program for students with special needs.

Walking toward his classroom, Baker's mother saw the gym bag. There was a small hole at the top, she said, and she heard a familiar voice.

"Momma, is that you?" Chris said, according to his mother.

A teacher's aide was there, and Baker demanded that her son be released. At first, the aide struggled to undo the drawstring, but the boy was pulled out of the bag, which had some small balls inside and resembled a green Army duffel bag, Baker said.

"When I got him out of the bag, his poor little eyes were as big as half dollars and he was sweating," Baker said. "I tried to talk to him and get his side of the reason they put him in there, and he said it was because he wouldn't do his work."

Baker said when school officials called the family to pick him up, they were told he was "jumping off the walls." Days later, at a meeting with school officials, Baker said she was told the boy had smirked at the teacher when he was told to put down a basketball, then threw it across the room.

Story: Autism can be an 'advantage,' says researcher

At a meeting with school district officials, the bag was described as a "therapy bag," Baker said, though she wasn't clear exactly what that meant. She said her son would sometimes be asked to roll over a bag filled with balls as a form of therapy, but she didn't know her son was being placed in the bag. She said school officials told her it was not the first time they had put him in the bag.

So far, almost 700 people have signed a petition on the website change.org. Lydia Brown, an autistic 18-year-old Georgetown University freshman from Boston, said she started it after reading a story about Chris.

"That would not be wrong just for an autistic student. That would be wrong to do to anyone," Brown said.

Advocates for the autistic were outraged.

Landon Bryce of San Jose, Calif., a former teacher who blogs about issues related to autism, said the school's treatment of Chris was "careless and disrespectful."

"A lot of the damage that we do to students with all kinds of disabilities is by treating them as though they deserve to be treated in a way that's different from other people," Bryce said.

Baker said she heard different accounts about her son's behavior that day.

Baker stopped short of calling for the dismissal of school employees, but she said they should be suspended. They also need more training, she said.

In Kentucky, there are no laws on using restraint or seclusion in public schools, according to documents on the state Department of Education's website.

A July letter from the state agency to special education directors said the state had investigated two informal complaints this year.

In one, "a student (was) nearly asphyxiated while being restrained," and in the other, a student vomited from panic attacks after spending most of an academic year "confined to a closet, with no ventilation or outside source of light," according to the letter.

Baker's case was first reported by WLEX and WKYT.

Blast in Iraq and Strong US Data Support Oil

Commodities traded within a narrow range but with a mildly positively tone. Unexpected decline in initial jobless claims in the US, together with better-than-expected confidence data, sustained the market. Intensified geopolitical tensions in oil producing countries also supported oil prices. The front-month contract for WTI crude oil climbed to as high as 100.05 before settling at 99.53, up +0.87%, while Brent crude contract closed largely flat at 107.89.

Bombings in Baghdad killed about 60 people and over 100 injured. It's suspected that the blast was due to tensions between Shiite and Sunni Muslims. The case raised concerns over the oil supply outlook. According to Hussain al-Shahristani, Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs, Iraqi crude oil production has exceeded 3M bpd, the highest level in at least 20 years. al-Shahristani stated that 'Iraq's crude production will rise to 3.4M bpd by the end of next year, and exports will rise to 2.6M bpd, including 175K barrels from fields in the northern Kurdish region, next year from a current average of 2.2M bpd of oil a day'.

The market was rather quiet yesterday, making encouraging economic data from the US the major driver of prices. Initial jobless claims surprisingly fell to 364K, the lowest level since April 2008 in the week ended December 17 from 366K a week ago. The market had anticipated a rise to 375K. Continuing claims also dropped -79K to 3.55M, the lowest level since September 2008, in the week ended December 10. University of Michigan Confidence was revised higher to 69.6 in December from 67.7 in the prior month. This was compared with consensus of a milder increase to 68.2. Moreover, leading indicators climbed +0.5% in November, following a +0.9% gain in October. The market had anticipated an increase of +0.3%.

The US durable goods orders probably gained +2.2% in November after contracting -0.7% in October. The reading excluding transportation probably climbed +0.4%, easing from +0.7% a month ago. The US will also report personal income and spending today. Both are expected to have gained +0.3% in November. New home sales might have increased +0.95% to 313K in November.

Some nearby young stars may be much older than previously thought

ScienceDaily (Dec. 21, 2011) ? Low in the south in the summer sky shines the constellation Scorpius and the bright, red supergiant star Antares. Many of the brightest stars in Scorpius, and hundreds of its fainter stars, are among the youngest stars found near Earth, and a new analysis of them may result in a rethinking of both their ages and the ages of other groups of stars.

New research by astrophysicists from the University of Rochester focused on stars in the north part of the constellation, known as Upper Scorpius, which is a part of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association, one of our best studied groups of young stars and a benchmark sample for investigating the early lives of stars and the evolution of their planet-spawning disks. The Upper Scorpius stellar group lies roughly 470 light years from Earth.

While those stars have been thought to be just five million years old, the team concludes that those stars are actually more than twice as old, at 11 million years of age. The findings are surprising given Upper Scorpius's status as one of the best-studied samples of young stars in the sky.

The findings by graduate student Mark Pecaut and Assistant Professor Eric Mamajek of Rochester, and Assistant Professor Eric Bubar of Marymount University, were accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

The scientists came to their conclusions after analyzing hundreds of optical spectra measured with the SMARTS 1.5-meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) in Chile, as well as reanalyzing previously published data on the stars.

"We combined our new estimates for the temperatures of the stars based on our spectra, with data on the brightnesses and distances to estimate accurate luminosities," said Pecaut. "Then we used state-of-the-art stellar evolution models to determine the ages."

While similar methods were used in the past to calculate ages for some of the Upper Scorpius stars, Pecaut says no previous study has determined independent age estimates for members of the group over such a wide range of stellar masses. The new analysis shows that stars over a wide range of masses in Upper Scorpius -- from slightly more massive than our Sun, up to the mass of the bright star Antares (17 times the mass of our Sun) are giving ages consistent with a mean age of 11 million years.

"For one thing, the distances to the stars are now much more accurately known," said Pecaut. "Also, the newer computer models take into account the rotation of the stars and its effect on the mixing on the star's hydrogen -- its nuclear fuel source."

"The first criticism that we heard of the work was that our age estimates for the stars more massive than the Sun in Upper Scorpius disagreed drastically with previously published ages for the smaller stars in the group," said Mamajek. "However, we think the stellar parameters and models are on much firmer footing for the higher mass stars than for the lowest mass stars. The computer models of stars have trouble predicting the correct masses of low-mass stars when they are dynamically measureable, as well as the rate at which the low-mass stars consume their lithium through nuclear reactions. The situation is better for the high mass stars. So there is no reason to think that the ages for the smaller stars would be more accurate."

The results from Rochester have immediate implications for one recent discovery. In 2008, Canadian astronomers reported the discovery of the first imaged exoplanet orbiting a young Sun-like star -- identified as 1RXS J160929.1-210524b. The object and its host star are members of the Upper Scorpius group. If the age of the star is much older than first thought, then the "exoplanet" has been cooling off for a longer period of time and consequently has a greater mass. In this case, the predicted mass of the object goes from roughly 8 Jupiter masses to 14 Jupiter masses. Consequently, the object would not be considered an exoplanet by the discoverer's original definition, but a brown dwarf -- a so-called "failed star." However there is considerable uncertainty about the origins of the low-mass companions discovered circling some stars on wide orbits at hundreds of astronomical units, so the jury is still out on the nature of objects like 1RXS J1609b.

Pecaut says with more accurate estimates of the ages of stars, scientists can better understand how long it takes planets to form. For example, if 11-million-year-old stars do not have gas accreting around them, it means that gas-rich planets like Jupiter and Saturn would have to form in less than 11 million years.

Pecaut expects that the findings of the Rochester team will encourage scientists to reassess the ages of other star clusters. If it's determined that other stellar populations are systematically older than originally believed, then it may mean that the conditions for forming gas giant planets like Jupiter around young stars may typically persist for millions of years longer than previously thought.

"If a stellar group as well-studied as Upper Scorpius can be twice as old as previously believed, then all bets are off on the accuracy of the previously published ages for other similar groups of young stars," added Mamajek.

ComScore?s 2011 Social Report: Facebook Leading, Microblogging Growing, World Connecting

You already know that social networking sites have been getting huge around the world, but an annual report out today from comScore shows what exactly is going at a wonderful new level of detail, with surprises for even long-time industry watchers like me.

1 in every 5 minutes of time online is now being spent on social networking sites, up from a mere 6% in early 2007. The sites, led by Facebook, now reach 82% of the world?s internet-using population ? about 1.2 billion people in total. This growth is happening across countries, with 41 of the 43 countries that the web measurement firm tracks showing penetration of 85% or more.

Within these big numbers, though, all sorts of differences emerge. People in Latin America spend an especially large portion of their time online on sites like Facebook and Twitter ? 28%, or 7.6 hours per month. That?s much less the case in Asia, where it?s 11% and less than 3 hours per month. Those are broad averages, and full of anomalies. The Philippines, for example, is actually the most socially networked country in the world, with 43% of users time going to these services, and above 8.7 hours.

Facebook itself is making up the largest portion of all this usage ? even as all sorts of rivals and alternatives are surging. The service reached 55% of the worlds? online population in October, with incredibly high engagement: 3 out of every 4 minutes on these types of sites, and every seventh online minute. For the most part, it has surged into first places across countries that had previously been on rival sites, like Orkut in Brazil.

But Facebook is running out of new users in North America and Western Europe simply because it has so much of these markets already (even though it?s not running out of users? attention). In the meantime, a whole other crop of social sites are booming everywhere, led by Twitter.

The microblogging service has grown by 59% in the past year to reach 160 million monthly unique users worldwide. Professional social network LinkedIn has grown by 55% to nearly 100 million. Easy-blogging site Tumblr is up 172% to nearly 40 million; Chinese Twitter-style site Sina Weibo shows almost identical growth (albeit mostly in China).

Report co-author Andrew Lipsman says this is one of the trends that was most surprising to him about the report. There?s more and more people who want to share around interests, not just the close social relationships.

All in all, many of these market leaders are also showing just how global they are these days, with Twitter and Facebook each now having 80% of their users outside of the US.

The report has all sorts of other data gems, too. Here?s a few that jumped out at me:

- Google+ now has 65 million users worldwide. That thing has some legs, even if we don?t always see them here at TechCrunch.

- Women continue to lead men in engagement across the world ? by 2 hours or 30% per month in North America and Europe. This is a long-term trend that comScore has seen across older services like instant messaging. But, men have shown a 10% bump since July of 2010, and they gradually appear to be catching up. A lot of this has to do with age. Usage is about at equilibrium among younger age groups, Lipsman notes.

- Mobile is crucial to usage in many markets and growing, but continues to account for a minority of overall usage. Between a quarter and a third of users in Western markets reported accessing social networking sites at least once a month from mobile devices.

- Ads are still playing catch-up to spending levels per traffic that you?d expect to see in other areas.

- Email usage has been declining in usage among younger age groups, a trend that?s not likely to change.

This is by no means all of the interesting data in the report. You can download the full thing on comScore?s site, here. I should note that it deserves credit for doing an especially good job providing easy-to-read data visualizations ? something that you don?t see often enough amidst all the awful infographics out there.

ComScore?s methodology, considered by many to be the best in the measurement business, includes large-scale opt-in user sampling around the world and across desktop and mobile devices.

Rsearchers demonstrate new DNA detection technique

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? A team of researchers from the University of Notre Dame have demonstrated a novel DNA detection method that could prove suitable for many real-world applications.

Physicists Carol Tanner and Steven Ruggiero led the team in the application of a new technique called laser transmission spectroscopy (LTS). LTS is capable of rapidly determining the size, shape and number of nanoparticles in suspension.

In a new paper appearing in the international, peer-reviewed, open-access, online publication PLoS ONE, the team describes how they applied LTS as a novel method for detecting species-specific DNA where the presence of one invasive species was differentiated from a closely related invasive sister species.

The research was carried out in support of and cooperation with Notre Dame's Environmental Change Initiative (ECI). Scientists from ECI are using environmental DNA (eDNA) as part of their surveillance of Asian carp in the Great Lakes region.

The results of the research demonstrate the basic premise of DNA detection by LTS in the laboratory.

The Notre Dame research team points out that the LTS technique has many benefits over established DNA detection techniques. The technique is highly sensitive and takes only a few seconds to genetically score a sample for species presence or absence. The researchers also feel that LTS technology will prove much more rapid, practical and cost effective than current detection methodologies and could ultimately reach the sensitivity required to eliminate the need for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification.

Although the current paper describes the use of LTS in invasive species detection, the Notre Dame researchers believe that the technique could serve as an important tool in detecting human pathogens and understanding and indicating the presence of genetic diseases such as cancer.

Egypt Protests: Second Day Of Violence Rocks Cairo, 8 Killed

CAIRO, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Eight people have been killed as clashes between troops and protesters in central Cairo spilled over into a second day, Egyptian state television said on Saturday.

It also said that 303 people had been wounded in the unrest in the capital, whose centre has turned into a smoke-filled battleground in some of the most violent clashes since a popular uprising ousted President Hosni Mubarak last February.

Egypt's Dar al-Iftah, the body that issues Islamic fatwas (edicts), said one of its senior officials, Emad Effat, was among the dead, state news agency MENA said.

Clashes around government offices and parliament raged on after nightfall on Friday, with protesters throwing petrol bombs
and stones at soldiers who used batons and what witnesses said appeared to be electric cattle prods.

The violence has sharpened tensions between the ruling army and its opponents, and clouded a parliamentary vote set to bring Islamists, long repressed by Mubarak, to the verge of power.
